The Theatre of Tennessee Williams, Vol. 1: Battle of Angels / The Glass Menagerie / A Streetcar Named Desire

As I read the play it reminded me of how it feels to be alive again, within the story of another character.

Tennessee Williams, Eugene O'Neill, Edward Albee, Arthur Miller, William Inge, Tony Kushner, Chekhov, Ibsen, Shakespeare, Blanche Dubois, Mary Tyrone, Hamlet, Judith Desire, Oedipus Rex (which literally means King Swollen Foot, all you Freudians), Gordon Edwards. The eminent. And the rest, well, their grasp has exceeded our reach. In a country whose populace believe that a male God created a male Son and from the son woman was born who was bewitched by a talking snake and caused untold misery, in such a country, with only Ayn Rand, a true nitwit left who praises greed and selfishness, what can I, what can you, what can anyone say? It is hopeless, futile. In other words, it is a waste of time. I mean, look at race relations and how they've improved since the Civil Rights era. What progress. We must always have to take into account that the middle class is an ocean. You can either swim with the tide or you can be drowned by rogue cross currents that'll pull you to the bottom of the sea where you will be eaten by hungry sharks. People are like hungry sharks but they pretend they're sheep, if you get my drift, well, they sure act like a herd walking nonchalantly into the slaughterhouse. And so I salute humanity at the verge of the age of robots. This for all you electronic freaks who sit all day in cafes staring at a computer and buying a small cup of coffee.

Tennessee William forma, com Arthur Miller e Eugene O'Neill, a tríade dos meus autores favoritos no contexto do teatro clássico norte-americano contemporâneo (haverá quem discorde). Miller e Williams exploram basicamente dramas presentes na sociedade moderna norte-americana, e, de certa forma, presentes em diversos outros contextos globais, pois os modos de viver e sentir norte-americanos foram vigorosamente exportados para o mundo, basicamente via cinema e música popular, e, em menor escala, teatro, cujo público é necessariamente menor, a não ser em temporadas extremamente dilatadas no tempo. O'Neill dialoga explicitamente com a tradição clássica, especialmente com o teatro dramático grego. A presente coleção seriada das obras de Williams me é mais útil do que a aquisição mandatória dos dois volumes da sua obra completa, não mais disponível em volumes individuais, separados cronologicamente. Aparentemente, devido a problemas pessoais graves, além de colaborações mal sucedidas, fato é que as peças posteriores de Williams me agradam bem menos. Poder escolher o que mais nos apraz é um direito de todo leitor, e a presente coletânea me permitiu escolher o que está mais afinado com o meu gosto e preferências.
