How to shake it down?

Hold tightly between thumb a forefinger and shake down with short repetitive shakes

How soon you get used to this item? Does it really need a nurse skill?

Doesn’t need nurse skill but very hard to read the temperature. Might be the most accurate thermometer we have bought but still a piece of junk.

If mercury-free means that it does not have mercury, what then does it use?

Galinstan®. Galinstan liquid consists of tin, indium, and gallium. According to its manufacturer, Galinstan is not toxic when swallowed because it passes through the digestive system without effect.
