Are they completely plastic?

The timer glass is covered by plastic which is safe for children or other users.

Can the colored top and bottom be taken out? I want to use tuis for an art project but don't care for the colored top and bottom.

Sorry didn't answer sooner. I believe it can be taken apart. The actual hourglass is inside a plastic tube with those colored stops on each end. I didn't try to take it apart, it wouldn't come off easily, and I didn't want to break it asI need it as it is. Hope this helped.
