Great game, but I didn't care for the direction

*by T***S on Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2016*

You see, I greatly enjoyed the first game. Though it had flaws, like the inability to go to certain areas, overall it was a fantastic experience and one that I went through at least twice. This one is supposed to be more of the same, and in reality it is with some extra overpoweredness. But what really bugged on this one: it simply didn't make any sense.- In the first game, you are whisked away. Mind you, you're like level 80 or something. In this game, they reset you back down to 40 even if you load save data. This is a HUGE turn off. What they should have done is let you keep everything you earned in the first game, instead you get a few pity items and little else. You don't even get to keep wearing your Class VII uniform (you're forced to beat the game to get it back. Why? He's wearing it at the beginning of the game!)- The new Cryptids are a significant challenge, but never to the point you feel like you're going to lose. It's more like they abuse skills to get an unfair advantage and they get annoying.- I died twice. There was a battle with a creature that kept using sleep attacks despite my every effort, then near the end you face some rivals where the pair of them used their S-Break, and together there simply was no survival. The first S-Break did Nightmare and Sleep, the second S-Break was basically so much damage you were dead. Unfair and unbalanced, since the boss right before them (who happened to be presented in the game as some super powerful character), I walked right through.- Again, as with the first game, they're shoving Alisa down your throat. In one segment near the end, it's abundantly clear the developers are forcing the issue even if you prefer a different classmate. The others' scene is more subdued, like "you are special to me" but with Alisa the only thing Rean DIDN'T do is get down on one knee with a ring. It's like come on.- The ending totally contradicts the scenes I mentioned above, because...well, just take that for what it is. The ending was a letdown.- There's an additional segment with characters from a different Legend of Heroes game, and this segment was jarring for many reasons - one because the other Legend of Heroes game was never released stateside, so you have no idea who these characters are or why you're now controlling them. At the end of their segment is an even bigger cliffhanger and you'll likely facepalm at what's going on.The connections between Rean and the others don't feel anywhere near as obvious and blatant as they did in the first game. I'm not sure what it is really. In the first game, Fie especially, there was a definite connection you could feel. Here, he meets the crew again and they're working together all fine and good, but the bonds just don't feel the same. As if they're together simply because they have to be rather than the relationship. The ending even further cements this disconnected feeling.- New Game + is a possibility but I couldn't bring myself to tolerate this a second time around especially since of the above. Very little of the comedy to be had, a fair bit of backtracking and a lack of the personalities all around. This is NOT a bad game, I enjoyed it for what it was. But I simply felt it was a step backward from the first one.

What more could you want from a JRPG?

*by T***T on Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2016*

Much like the first game in the series, this is a slow burn. It picks up right where the last game left, and gets you right into the thick of things. After about 10 hours in, there seem to be more moments in this game (so far) that get the player invested in the friendship between Rean and his classmates. Reunions are, in most cases, touching, especially the first few. In the current gaming world of 6-20 hour games, this 100+ hour game is more than welcome to me. This game is a throwback to the depth RPGs in the 90s and early 2000s had, but with modern day gameplay sprinkled in. Those of you looking for a sprawling adventure with deep (though somewhat predictable) characters and story, look no further. I'm enjoying this every bit as much as the first game, which clocked in at just over 200 hours for 2 playthroughs. Just make sure you get the first game if you haven't played it yet!Pros:- Story- Character Development- Streamlined Battle System with some welcome additions- Soundtrack- The Orbment and crafting features (don't want to spoil things by saying more)Cons:- Mild occasional frame rate drop on the Vita, which doesn't really bother me, more just an observation- Sometimes traveling through the games larger areas can take a LONG time, but they do at least throw in useful items to find along the way if you bother to look.Overall I would fully recommend this game, and its predecessor, to anyone looking for a solid modern day JRPG experience that has a touch of the old school magic in the mix. Now to see how many playthroughs it takes to satisfy the completionist in me before part 3 comes out!

    A Really Great JRPG

*by O***A on Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2016*

It was a great game, and I loved all the characters and the storyline. Some of the plot twists were a bit...out there I have to say, but all in all, it was a really great game for me; though I will say end was....unfulfilling, though in a way it also seemed very fitting. I tend to bounce back and forth between sad acceptance, and total irritation. But I think that might be a more personal issue than a game problem.I admit, I was initially very hesitant to start this series, but a dear friend talked me into it and I have to say, it was worth every penny. I had a great time playing. I'm hoping for a third installment.
