Modern Rudimental Swing Solos for the Advanced Drummer (Charley Wilcoxon Snare Drum Series - LudwigMasters)

Great musical, rudimental etude book written many years ago and still very relevant!Used and praised by the best of the jazz drummers! All the etudes have great phrasing. A must for the musical drummer who wants his/her hands (and head) to be in great shape! Swinging!

This was always one of my favorite drum books - great for developing syncopation and improving rudimental drumming technique. My 25+ year old copy is by now falling apart, so I decided to pick up a new one. Unfortunately, this edition goes overboard labeling the sticking. For every flam, single drag, etc., they label both the regular note and the grace note(s). So for example, for a single drag that should on the right stick, they'll label it L L R instead of just R. This makes the labeling cluttered and hard to read. Although the grace notes are printed in a smaller font, it's really not much smaller. But really, why are they labeling the grace notes at all? It's obvious that it would be the opposite stick from the regular note. It's an advanced book, so to label every single flam and drag just seems... dumb. The old edition just labeled the regular notes, and it was never confusing. So why Ludwig had to mess it up is beyond me.Still a great book; I just wish Ludwig hadn't made a mess of the sticking!

Good Book

Charlie Wilcoxen's book is terrific! If you ever wondered where many of the jazz pioneers from Buddy & Gene, Papa Joe Jones to Tony William's learned how to make the drums speak and got inspiration from open this book. If I where only trained from this book and knew how to think like this years ago I wouldn't have been lost wandering like Mose for 40 years!

Classic book

This is a legendary book with solos mostly for snare but also some using the rest of the kit. For some reason, in all my years of learning the drums, I've not learned much material like this. It will come as no surprise that the pieces all contain various rudiments and are great for developing real life applications of these ancient exercises. I've been enjoying learning the first composition and am looking forward to working through the rest of the book.The cover says it's for advanced drummers. Generally, I think that's correct although I intend on introducing the first couple of pages to some of my intermediate students.
