Doc Watson

The Master In Pure Distilled Form
I absolutely love this CD!! Doc Watson was the finest flatpicking guitarist that ever lived. This CD is a collection of solo recordings ... just Doc's voice and guitar. The magic of Doc is that, within the simple structure of folk and bluegrass music, he weaves in so many fills and runs on his guitar. Its really quite amazing. If you've learned to play guitar (I took lessons for a few years), you can't help but be in awe over how complex, light and clean his playing is.I had the pleasure of seeing Doc live several times. My guitar teacher urged me to see him whenever he was in the area, and I'm so glad I did. He was a legend !!

Doc Watson's Southbound is a forgotten classic. There is something so intimate about this record. Simple, yet sophisticated, instrumentation, mixed with Watson's unique and personable voice make this album a true gem. You get the feeling that he is both a re-imaginer of and an authentic artists of folk music. Bob Dylan is great, and so are the many songwriters of the Greenwich Village scene. But Doc Watson retains a certain charm that I feel others lack. And, in my subjective opinion, this vinyl repressing is absolutely top notch.

A Great collection of Classic "DOC"
I am a big fan of Doc Watson. I grew up in Texas and first heard Doc and Merle on Prairie Home Companion in the mid 80's.Some 15 years later I moved out to Boone, NC where Doc lived, Deep Gap, NC to be exact. I got to meet him and talk to him quite a few times. He actually came into a diner I worked at, and I got to cook him breakfast. I surely do miss him, and his down home charm. Any fan of "Doc" will love this collection.

He had a lasting influence
I am so sorry I waited until his death to listen to him for the first time. He gave shows in the town I live in and I never gave it a thought to check one out. Truly my loss to not see him do his music live. This album, and I'm sure all his albums are a treasure. I will be looking into getting more.

It's Doc - what else do you need to say
Doc Watson - If you know the name and you don't have this recording, what are you waiting for? If you never heard of him, give this a try and you'll understand why many think of Doc as the greatest flat-picker ever. He wasn't too shabby at fingerstyle either so if you like acoustic guitar, American music, or just enjoy good tunes you'll like this.

poor sound quality
This one is fine for those who have other Watson albums and are looking to fill out their collection. Pretty crude recording - and missing lots of his best stuff.
