Vanguard presents every dragon lover's dream come true, Art of the Dragon: The Definitive Collection of Contemporary Dragon Paintings. This concise yet comprehensive survey by Visions of Never author Patrick Wilshire and How to Draw Chiller Monsters, Werewolves, Vampires, and Zombies author J. David Spurlock presents and examines the ultimate collection of contemporary dragon paintings and provides insights about the foremost dragon-painting fantasy artists including Jeff Easley, Larry Elmore, Clyde Caldwell, Keith Parkinson, Todd Lockwood, Donato Giancola, John Howe, Bob Eggleton, Don Maitz, Stephen Hickman, Boris Vallejo, Julie Bell, Greg Hildebrandt, and record-breaking Hugo Award winner Michael Whelan who, also provides the cover to this long-awaited and breathtaking compendium. This book is dedicated to the memory of the late, great fantasy artist Jeffrey Catherine Jones who passed away May 19, 2011. Review: good collection - Very good, labor-intensive collection of artworks and the artists behind them, especially if you are looking for a specific art piece as a well hanging or an artist to pursue when researching. However most of these are very much 1960s-1980s dragons: chicken legs, long alligator/bird beaks, evil eyes. Despite offering direction on some modern artists, these are definitely the Frank Frazetta/Boris Vallejo dark fantasy style dragons you would see painted on the side of a van in the 80s. I would like to see more of a modern, digital art western-style dragon art collection wherein you can see more muscle definition, realistic snouts, realistic geometry, creatures that -actually look- like they could be alive and flying about. My intended goal was to find a print of a large specimen flying through the clouds to use as wall art. Review: more hands on information..Please - Great paintings by many Dragon artist. Liked the index and web page reference at the back but would have like some more information on the painting techniques and maybe some photos of a paintings in progress instead of just the final finished painting..There was one page under Lockwood that showed (small) the musculature of the dragon and I would have like more information along this line. Art is a process and I only see the end result .

Definitely worth your while
Great book for fantasy art afficianados. The authors succeeded in gathering a collection of many of my favorite artists and it is nice to see them all in one place. The artists are given plenty of room to explain their techniques on painting dragons - this is very cool because it makes the book a great reference in addition to the large amount of eye candy/ numerous dragon pics. The authors did a superb job in gathering so many different (and frequently recognizeable) dragon images from so many different sources. If I was to cite a fault I think for me it would be with the two page spreads. The crease in the book - sometimes in the middle of the image / right through the focal point (i..e. right through the dragon), dampens the enjoyment of an image for me. There aren't a ton of these two page spreads but sometimes they are representative of the artist's best work, and so the crease is annoying in those cases. Not sure if it is the same with the hardback - I opted for the paperback. Aside from that quibble with the two page spreads, I'm very happy with this book... five stars all the way!

An excellent book!
I have really enjoyed this book. I didn't know the names of all the artists, but I knew many of them. And I have been surprised at how many pieces of cover art I recognized from my book collection.

great variety of artwork and artist bio's
Finally! just what I've been looking for all these years. A comprehensive collection of clear and vivid dragon artwork along with bio's of featured artists and their interpretations of the dragon element. My only complaint would be how the two-page spreads sometimes rupture a key point of the chosen image, although I know that it isn't exactly easy to get around this.

The Best Collection of Dragons Ever!
This is the perfect collection ever. All the pictures of dragons are magnificent. The paintings and illustrations available in this book are amazing. All the best known artists for this category are here. The quality of paper is top notch. Donโt hesitate! I have removed one star for my review only because my book arrived damaged in the transport which was pretty deceiving, especially at this price! Look at my photos.
