That is the proper way to measure DAO for this purpose. An HDU is a histamine digesting unit. The ingredients list tells you what the product is made from. Check out the manufacturer’s website. Some DAO is from animal products. This one is not and I find it much more effective. I often take less than 1 tablet. I cut them into fourths and take one or more fourths depending upon how I may react to particular foods. Takes a little trial and error, but worth the effort to figure out so that I’m not taking more than I need. **Q: Does this product contain sulfur/sulfites or any derivative of in any of the inactive ingredients? As well, is there any polyethylene glycol?** A: The product does not contain any of them. The product only contains what is labeled. **Q: I noticed these are individually packaged. If I divide a pill over several days, will exposure to the air cause make them less effective?** A: Do not break these pills. They are coated so that they pass through the stomach and go into the intestines before they open up. If you break them, they dissolve in the stomach acid and will not be as effective against histamine. You could, I suppose, grind them up and put a portion of the powder into a "delayed release" capsule. That would work, but what a pain. Just take the whole thing, having too much will not hurt you. This company also makes a 3,000,000 HDU version and it is in delayed release capsules. I take those. **Q: where is this manufactured ? Thanks** A: It says Spain. I purchased this product based on a recommendation from my GI specialist, based on a leaky gut test, showing I was low in DAO. I was diagnosed with MCAS, and Histamine Intolerance. Most supplements for straight DAO or beef kidney are quite expensive, on top of all the other supplements. So I chose this for cost. For context, DAO (from porcine) normally has 10,000 HDU's per pill. This has 1,000,000! I honestly figured that because it's plant-based, the HDU's weren't exact equivalents. A few hours after taking only 1 pill, 5 minutes before eating, per the instructions, I felt like my heart was going to explode out of my chest. I called family, and found myself extremely confused. My face started burning, lips tingling, then intense pain. I lost motor control in my facial muscles, as well as speech. I then called poison control, and completely lost my speech. They told me to hang up and call 911. This was a terrible experience. I WISH I would have read the 1 star reviews. Which is why I'm leaving a 5 star, in hopes more will see this. Clearly this supplement works for some people. However, if you are very reactive to foods, due to either histamine intolerance and/or MCAS, be VERY cautious in trying this supplement. While pea shoots do naturally produce DAO, which can help break down histamine, peas are lentils. And many people with MCAS/HIT cannot tolerate lentils as a whole food. Turn it into a supplemt with extremely high levels of the substance, and it may be a recipe for disaster.
