With the seat facing you, swing goes left to right. You can Turn the direction of the base to go forward and back. Base lifts off and can be repositioned to go either way.

Can babies bounce themselves in this the way way they can in a Baby Bjorn?

No, the seat removes from the swing and you basically have to bounce it with your foot.
