Daughter of the Forest: Book One of the Sevenwaters Trilogy

"Daughter of the Forest" ist ein so intensives Buch, dass man es kaum schafft die richtigen Worte dafür zu finden. Es ist eins der traurigsten, aber auch eins der schönsten Bücher, die ich je gelesen habe. Sorcha ist ein sehr starkes Mädchen, das unglaublich viel Leid ertragen muss, um ihre Brüder zu retten. Und als Leser muss man gemeinsam mit ihr, die dunkelsten Stunden ertragen. Man bewundert sie für ihren Mut und ihre Kraft und kommt nicht umhin sich zu fragen, wie sie es schafft trotz aller Widrigkeiten ihren Weg weiter zu gehen. Gleichzeitig ist sie jedoch keine perfekte Heldin, die mit einem Fingerschnipsen alle Probleme lösen kann. Die Handlung entspricht einem Märchen, durch die Charaktere jedoch und die Entwicklungen geht das Buch noch viel weiter. Es handelt von tiefer Verbundenheit und Liebe zwischen Geschwistern, von vernichtendem Hass, von Unschuld und Grausamkeiten. Ein Mädchen, das durch die Hölle und zurück geht, um die zu retten die es liebt und dabei alles verliert. Einziger winziger Kritikpunkt ist die eher schwache Romanze, die so sehr im Hintergrund bleibt (bis auf die letzten Seiten), dass man nicht mitfühlen kann, wie sich die Liebe zwischen den Charakteren entwickelt. Wer also eine romantische Liebesgeschichte mit Happy End erwartet, wird von dem Buch wohl eher enttäuscht werden. Für alle anderen kann das Buch nur eine Bereicherung sein.

The Sevenwaters series is Marillier's best work, so start with this book if you have never read her before. This book led me to read all her other stuff. You fall in love with the amazing characters, especially the female protagonist, and when the book ends you miss them. People face tough decisions that have to do with love, duty, family, sacrifice, and Marillier describes these emotions so powerfully that you feel and admire the characters' struggles. For Sorcha to have to endure so much punishment and mistrust because of her forced silence, when she treats those who abuse her with kindness, you grow to love and admire her devotion to her brothers, to herself, to her community. The effect is more powerful in that she can only narrate these feelings to you, the reader, while the rest of the community has no idea what drives her. Many of Marillier's characters carry pain and secrets that color their lives. That's part of why Marillier's people and worlds are so real: every place and person has a history, a hint of having their own story that no one can fully learn. Even the villains feel their pain and anger so deeply you can't help but understand and fear them. As each book passes, you feel you know the characters like old friends and welcome their return. Due to her wonderful characters, the love story never fails to move me to tears. For Marillier's characters, love is about sacrifice, courage, and hope. The love she describes is so strong and grows in such a complex world that it always comes with pain. The amazing thing is she doesn't get graphic or have many scenes between the lovers for you to feel it. Her ability to get you to invest in the emotions really pays off here: a glance or a kiss takes your breath away because you understand what it took for this love to grow and endure, for these people to even be able to meet again. Marillier is a gifted storyteller who knows how to get into the daily life of each character without it seeming mundane. This approach makes the story so much more real, and Marillier can sketch a complex scene with efficiency. In just a few pages you feel every month Sorcha spends stitching those shirts, all the days she spends healing the soldier; she sucks you into the world by describing even the painful passing years, but her lyrical language (which matches well with the historical fantasy), her descriptions, and the emotions prevent it from being boring. Few writers so skillfully deal with the passage of time, so fully imagine another person in another world and so beautifully show their lives. The world she builds is alive, mysterious, and filled with natural beauty. I also love Ireland and gain pleasure from her inclusion of old Irish lore. I am eagerly awaiting her next book and my next trip to Ireland!

Happy to receive it intact despite the poor packaging. It got sent in a plastic bag, which kind of infuriated me. But the book is still in relatively good condition besides a little dent in the back and some slight damage around the edges. That's why I gave it 4 stars and not 5. Loved the Blackthorn and Grim books and can't wait to start reading the Sevenwaters series.

Estoy disfrutando mucho la lectura pero estoy decepcionado con el embalaje del paquete. Considerando el precio me parece que debería venir envuelto en el papel que trae burbujas integradas para la protección del mismo

Une forêt mystérieuse abrite le domaine de Sevenwaters où règne Colum, dur et intransigeant. Ses fils et sa fille, au nombre de sept, sont unis par un lien très fort. Le jour où arrive une marâtre digne de La Belle au Bois dormant, l'équilibre est rompu et Sorcha, unique fille de la fratrie, loyale et pure, va devoir se battre pour aider sa famille. Ce livre est prenant dès les premières pages: c'est d'abord la qualité de l'écriture qui a retenu mon attention avec des très jolies tournures de phrase. Ensuite, c'est le monde moyen-âgeux, la communion avec la forêt, le côté surnaturel qui n'est toutefois pas prépondérant. Ce livre a une trame de conte mais il est clairement destiné à un public adulte et les épreuves auxquelles font face les héros sont dures. Sorcha est une très jolie héroïne et elle est entourée d'autres personnages tout aussi intéressants. Le livre est rédigé à la première personne du singulier et nous n'avons donc que le point de vue de Sorcha- ce qui me prive toujours un peu même si cela a son utilité compte tenu des évènements qui se produisent. Une lecture que je recommande; le livre réunit histoires d'amour, d'amitiés, un monde à la limite du surnaturel et des évènements à foison. La suite, Son of the Shadows, n'est pas obligatoire puisque l'histoire de Daughter of the forest se termine sur un épilogue bien ficelé.
