The Annakut is a festival celebrating god Shrinathji’s (a name of Krishna) defeat of god Indra. Nine priests pay homage to the assembled deities before a feast of food offerings placed before the altar. A total of 56 different food offerings are arranged like a mountain to symbolize Govardhan Mountain. As a child Krishna lifted Govardhan Mountain for 7 days without eating any food. The food represents the daily 8 dishes missed over 7 days. The ceremony also commemorates the Sapta Swarupa utsava or installation of seven major murti (deities) of Shrinathji within the main shrine at Nathadwara temple in Rajasthan, which are shown in front of the central deity in the painting. Shrinathji is dark blue skinned with the left arm raised. Two priests attend the god, positioned on either side.
