I just put silicon sealer on the bottom and lots of gasket lube on the top and reassembled it right away. Waited 4 hours for the sealer to set and started up the filter. No more blow-by that was keeping my filter from working. In the photo you can see the channel in the old gasket where my filter was being bypassed. Bad news, the person who installed the previous gasket used atomic epoxy weld-it-on you-better-pray-this-never-has-to-come-apart glue! I kid you not, I was pulling, scraping, cutting, and scrubbing for 4 hours to get it clean enough for the new one! It's a crap shoot whether this will happen to you, unless you are sure that it is the first time it has been replaced or replaced the last time yourself. I'm sure it was done by someone who did not know what they were doing and wanted to make sure they didn't have to come back out. If you do have this problem, I used regular pliers, very small tip needle-nose pliers. a small screwdriver with a blade the width of the channel, exacto knife, razor blade, stiff nylon scrub brush, fine scotchbrite pads with a block, and lots and lots of patience and elbow grease! Silicone adhesive will last, and if it doesn't it will be easy to replace again. Just keep a spare spider on hand. I hope you don't have the problems I did! I hate that part of the valve design!
