Recommended for fans of Michael Crichton’s books
This book was a pleasant surprise for me. “The Edison Cipher” is a thriller, a genre I have avoided lately because often a lot of the text seemed like CGI fight-scene filler. Not my cup of tea. Thankfully, there is none of that here. Sure, there are fights, bad actors, and a body count, but these elements are presented smoothly into the plot. The story is very well paced, enough to keep me reading “just one more chapter” until two o’clock in the morning. Chapters are generally short, but not so short that the reader becomes irritated by choppy changes into a new scene. The characters are well-developed enough to make it easy to keep track of who’s who, although they tended to be basic stereotype patterns. (Note: there is a splendid dog in the story to worry about; nothing bad must happen to the dog!)However, the key element of a thriller (technothriller, to be more precise) is the plot, the tug of suspense, the puzzles. This story has all of those elements and more. Without summarizing the plot, risking spoilers, there is a great deal of content in this novel. It is heavy on science, but not incomprehensively so. For those who enjoy the detail found in forensic or medical TV dramas, this fits the bill. Add government conspiracy, the double-edged sword of genetic tinkering, and a mutated species of attack chickens, and the result is a very satisfying read. My only criticism there is that the ending seems very abrupt, but all the loose ends are tidied away, so I really can’t complain.*Okay, there aren’t actually any attack chickens; you’ll have to read it to find out what this refers to. :) Enjoy!

Techno Thriller
A genre that feeds my soul, a thriller laced with copious amounts of science. Reminiscent of and would recommend to fans of Michael Crichton and A. G. Riddle. My only complaint is that the crisis seemed to be cut short prematurely. And some of the characters were so distinct, like the parents, Juan the main protagonist, and Jasper the dog, but others not so much. Interesting treatise on GMO’s.

Awesome Read!
I absolutely loved this book. I was totally hooked. The narration and dialog and storyline was great! I loved the science behind it too and you don’t need to be a scientist to understand it. It is a totally worthwhile read. I would love to write the screenplay for this. It should be a movie too!

Fun and educational
An exploration of potential abuse of gene therapy, with potentially extinction level results. Multiple protagonists, well developed characters, a little romance, death and suspense. Fun read. The antagonist are fairly vague, which leaves an opening for future stories, and I’m interested enough to want to know what happens to the main characters as their lives progress. I’ll read more of this author, he’s a good writer, with compact prose and vivid action.

Good First Attempt
We've seen it a zillion times - secret government plot, scary assassins, brave scientist / teacher / doctor (fill in blank), love interest, some science, lots of fiction. What separates the pros from the amateurs (writers, I mean) is not the just the details but style, plotting and sweep of the story. Our hero - there's actually two or three - is a Latino scientist (add obligatory exclamations of race or language) who is out to put an end to cancer. Along the way he discovers a "cure" which is then stolen and used in nefarious ways. Despite the story being a good beach read there's lots of holes. Why does the "government" want to use the cure without waiting for it to be perfected? What do all the weird experiments mean? Why are professional hit spies so clumsy? There's glimpses of Koontz (The Watcher), Cook, Ludlum. etc - as we meet enhanced dogs, foreign agents, advanced genetic manipulation and other assorted elements of a modern story. It's not a bad story - just predictable. Blame the characterization . They didn't sound authentic and the "romance" was as chaste as a medieval virgin awaiting her knight. The two 30sh folks acted like middle school kids. Another problem was the division of time between the main guy and the FBI plot. When a reader loses track of a character there are either too many characters or not enough detail about those selected. The world is saved by the usual methods - unknown folks leave "inside" messages, high-level phone calls taped in secure buildings (somehow), X "hearing" something from Y. You get the gist. At least there was no political ranting for this or that agenda as is so often the case. The author should try again and up his game.

Reality Check
I have to say as a person trained in the medical field, and as we experience the 3rd year of a worldwide pandemic, this novel has kept me awake at night. A pandemic was something I learned about during history class in school. Climate change is something we have heard about for years that will not have much of an effect on humanity for the next 3 or more generations. Yet here I sit, a drought for many years here and unusual devastation across the world with floods, fires, raging storms like we have not seen before. This storyline may be fiction but the reality we are living in is nonfiction. This is a book I will never forget because it is as well written as it is feasible. I love books that put me into deep thought and that pull me so far into the adventures I feel like one of its characters!

Totally Enthralling!
One of THE best novels I’ve ever read! Not sure how this book even popped up as a recommendation to read on Amazon, but I’m so glad I took the plunge! I was (and still am) a Michael Crichton fan; oh, how I miss his thought-provoking stories. Rothman is right up there with him…if not higher. Just an amazing, non-stop, adrenaline-rushing plot, well-woven scientific elements, likable characters…and I LOVED the Addendum! Simply fascinating! I’m a 12-grade English teacher, and this book will make it’s way onto my reading list. Please write more!!!

Wow amazing!
What a book, i loved everything from beginning to end. The characters are likable and grow with the story. The science, although scary, isn't differcult to grasp as it is explained well and not overdone. The story is about people and connections and ultimately love.

A Great Techno-thriller
I really enjoyed this book. Firstly I immediately identified with the totally believable characters and cared about what happens to them. I don’t read books where I don’t care! The storyline was brilliant. The science bits were relatively easy to understand and formed the basis of a plausible plot. It was thrilling and demands your attention til the end and you cannot guess what the end might be. And as a self published author I must say the editing is totally professional and is as good as any of the publishing houses. I enjoyed the author so much I will be downloading more of his books.
