Some cars (looking at you BMW) like to overheat even when the headgasket is not blown, so this is an essential tool for being able to say 100% that you have hydrocarbons in your coolant. The hydrocarbons are what this detects, and exhaust gasses create them. If the headgasket is intact, you won't have hydrocarbons in your coolant. So it's a pretty darn good test.I was able to use this on a car that ran fine, showed no issues, but slightly overheated at red lights.
