I'm not sure I've not had to refill yet my ink is still dark and writing smooth.

can you screw the cap on top of pen when writing? Does it write well?

This pen writes today as good or better as the day I purchased it.

Does this take pilot gel Frixion eraseable refills? Even if a small modification is ok.

Unfortunately no. The frixion has an enlarged neck nub that prohibits it from fully inserting.
