What type of needle should I use to put these on string?

I have not tried to sew these onto anything, or hang one on a string for my kitties, but I'd think .... well, I'm just guessing... that one of those curved needles would work well, or as well as anything. I don't know what they are used for normally, but I have seen them. I nearly failed the sewing part of Home Ec a hundred years ago, so I'm claiming NO expertise.

No. They have an aroma of wool, but no foul smells.

Would these resemble gum balls if used /placed in an antique candy dispenser for display only ?

These felt balls are roughly the size of a quarter or some may say a gumball. They are certainly colorful like candy and with the imagination surely one may see them fit as a play substitute for the eye! They are made of 100% New Zealand wool and hand felted by artisans in Nepal and definitely not for consumption, but like you said they are for a display only. If you decide to use them for your display, we would love to see a photo :)
