I have been using mushroom powders for 3 years, and until now did not realize they were grown in oatmeal and so, the mix of mycelium and mushroom is what I've been drinking all this time. My doctor wanted me off all grains, and so came across Longevity Botanicals organic Cordyceps powder. I add it to my coffee and smoothies every morning. So far, so good. Flavor: I was originally taken by the flavor of the oatmeal/mushroom mix from another brand - tastes like chocolate with same texture as cocoa. I didn't have the same flavor signals from this brand - but, the taste is still good. You might have to mix it a bit more, but in the long run it's worth it not to have the extra additives. I will purchase again!

I FOUND THIS TO BE A CONVENIENT WAY TO ADD SOME MAITAKE TO MY SHAKE. I OPEN A CAPSULE AND USE A SMALL AMOUNT OUT OF THE CAPSULE, AND EASILY CLOSE THE CAPSULE FOR THE NEXT TIME. THIS IS A NICE ALTERNATIVE TO ADDING DROPS OF A MAITAKE TINCTURE.

■ Taste: I take my daily portion in yogourt and it adds a smokey taste. It’s not something I would add to improve the taste, but it’s not too strong either. Because of the smoky taste, I may explore adding it to some main dishes. I was thinking maybe sprinkling it over a burger patty or on smoked salmon. ■ Value: At current price $59.99, I would consider this product more of a luxury good although taking one serving a day the bag should last you about two months. Worth noting, there’s a $5 applicable coupon as I’m writing this review. ■ Potential benefits: You need to be careful about claimed benefits as there are only limited studies done on humans. Having said that, it has been proven to suppress tumour growth in mice and increase the number of cancer-fighting cells which would suggest that it could also be helpful fighting cancer in humans. It has also been proven in fighting cholesterol in mice and again suggested that it could help combat cholesterol in humans and maintain healthy arteries. ■ Potential side-effects: Potential side effects, although rare and usually mild, would include allergic reaction (swelling of lips, mouth, airways, runny nose, watery eyes…), upset stomach and lowering of blood pressure which is generally a positive thing but not if you already have low blood pressure. So maitake is usually considered safe in all it’s forms powder, raw and cooked. ■ Wrap up: I’ve been taking this supplement for a week now, have had no side effects and can’t say I noticed any major health improvement, the opposite would’ve been surprising. But I believe that the potential benefits are long term and worth it. I also believe it’s safe to consume as it’s been used for centuries in Japanese cuisine.
