The trick is to gently hold the propeller as you wind it up, like the instructions say. Then dunk the sub and keep holding the propeller. You will see air bubbles exit. This creates ballast. Once the bubbles stop, release the sub. The submarine doesn't sink and it's difficult to wind up. The winding mechanism feels fragile, so I was very careful not to overwind. As you attempt to wind it, the side flippers want to go, so you need to hold them and the winder in an attempt to have it go in the water. We got it to propel, but it didn't quite make the distance in our standard bathtub.
