How long is the string? Can my six year old reach it and play?

It depends on the height of your doorway, I definitely think he/she could reach it. String is approx. 4-5 ft long. SO FUN, hours of entertainment with a partner or by one's self.

Can this attach to just the wall between 2 rooms, that is without a door frame?

Unfortunately, I don’t think so. It needs something to stop it from sliding down and that’s what the door frame would do. You may be able to get creative with hooks or nails to stop it from sliding though. It’s a great toy.

Has the manufacturer fixed the problem of the balls breaking?

Both balls were broken within the first 10 minutes of 9-year-old boys playing with it. I do believe trying to smash it was more like what they were doing…!
