We often have crazy weather during the spring and early summer.** A: RION Green House 8’ x 16’ My wife loves the greenhouse, but it does have some problem areas. I hired a landscaping company to help with the foundation and to assemble the greenhouse. Thank goodness…. The unit took us 2.5 days with 3 people to assemble. A day was spent preparing the foundation. Having taller stronger young people helps as the assembly is 6+’ feet in the roof areas but we did use 6’ step ladders a lot. The greenhouse is installed in a terrace area with exposure to prevailing winds which have blown open windows and doors, and blown off the roof window vent panels several times, and bent part 989 (686). Try to aim the door end away from the winds… For the foundation we installed landscape stones 3 high to match existing walls. We dug shallow footers and filled with crusher run and compacted. At the four corners and in the middle of the two 16’ walls we dug deeper holes and poured concrete with threaded rods. The rods extended through the stone and through a 2x12 TRT on the top that made the base. The 2x12 gave us wiggle room to get the unit perfectly square. The green house was screwed to the 2x12 with deck 3” screws at all joints. The only problem with this design is it makes a 10” high door sill to step over when entering the greenhouse. We may add ramps. As someone mentioned the greenhouse is larger than 8’ x 16’ by several inches. We pre-assembled the base and measured. Note… the little wooden tools provided, work great, use them setting & removing pins, and installing panels. Some plastic panels did require a lot of pressure to get installed in place. Especially the triangles over the doors, and the roof ridge panels… most frustrating. The roof assembly was difficult to assemble. We would get one section assembled, then when working on the next one it would cause the previous section to come apart… we finally started doing several steps of the instructions (steps – 43-55) for a section, from one side to the other and this helped. We made the floor of crusher run to absorb spilled water, and it seems to keep the humidity up. We bought tables with wire shelves at Lowes to place around the perimeter ($80 each at Lowes). We replaced the slide locks with Lowes Slide Action Bolt 87680 01777 9 from National Hardware. These worked great, heavy and long. You have to drill the plate provided (7215,7216 or 7218) with the green house with an additional hole and turn one screw around to get clearance for the slide latch. I put 2 on the fixed door (top & bottom) inside and one on the normal door at bottom outside. The outside bottom slide bolt catches in the 2x12 in a hole we drilled. We had to drill some holes in the plastic vertical pieces of the door to mount the new Slide Bolt and it was difficult drilling a straight hole through oval framing. Not sure what to do with the roof window vent panels. The little bendy extension part that holds 989 needs to be closer together. The windows have been holding for several months in a position of open about 6”. I cut some very short pieces of rubber tubing and slipped over the bendy pieces, restricting the back & forth movement of the window, which I think may have helped. We’ll see… Two of the ridge caps won’t stay on, tried silicon caulk but strong winds keep blowing off… after 3rd try they are holding… Note: we do live on a large lake with strong winds but no hail... other than the roof windows all seems to hange together.
