This is the second pair of these Trekology walking poles I've purchased down to one of the first set of poles failing... So why am I buying them a second time? Firstly I'd like to say that these poles are constructed from aviation grade aluminium. All that essentially means is that they are made from strong and lightweight aluminium. There are heavier (stronger/heavier) steel versions available, plus there are lighter (more expensive) carbon fiber ones. Whilst carbon fibre might be the gold standard for trail runners and competitive users, I'd argue it's benefit versus it's downsides .. The benefit is that it's a 25% (generally) lighter material, plus it absorbs impact better. The negative (beyond it's expense) is that it is more brittle and in my experience less long lived than aluminium. Given these poles weigh so little anyway at just 300g per pole (600g), the weight saving of 150g (the contents of two small tubes of toothpaste) seems a pretty mean mass discount competitive to any real benefit for the average or even experienced hiker. Those who also have taken a deal of time to research poles will have realised that these are also the top budget buy on the reputable independent testing site "Outdoor Gear Lab". I have also owned screw lock Lekkis before, and inconsistencies in reliability for non snap together variants mean (for me) those types are off my purchase list too. Big brand doesn't mean best. Cork handles are also a big plus for me. They don't truly "absorb sweat better", but just somehow "feel" more natural and comfortable in use. In short, my first pair lasted just a year or two of (honestly and literally) thousands of miles per year (I love hiking), but one only failed down to my own abuse using it to thrash through nettles on an overgrown path (I hit a very solid rock which bent the upper part enough for it being impossible to collapse at the handle end). My bad 100%. I've had several pairs over the years and these ones (£32 versus £80 for what I considered inferior Lekkis being one notable purchase) really will do everything you need really well and last a very long time indeed given appropriate and even heavy handed usage. In short, hiking poles are hiking poles. If this is your first pair and your buying to relieve knee or hip problems, practice in their correct use and you will be amazed how much they alleviate those problems. Don't give up (it feels difficult to uses them properly at first and you might feel a bit of a prat at first) but you WILL learn how to use them well with practice (YouTube instructions are helpful), and they WILL transform (or protect against future) orthopaedic issues. I'd massively recommend these as the ones to buy (two size are available so check the sizing guide). Unless you are an ultra athlete or a brand snob you do not need to spend a fortune. These are just great and as intuitive and reliable as anything else out there, really... Ps.. I now have a spare duplicate pole if I give in to thrashing through vegetation again with these in the future :)

My first time trying hiking poles. I used them today on a hike up to Kinder Scout - I was absolutely flying compared to my usual speed (especially on the uphills) and my legs honestly feel like I’ve only been on a stroll down the canal and feel like I could very easily do the whole walk again, whereas I’d usually be struggling to walk for the next couple of days as I’ve put a bit of timber on as of late. Due to the recent weather the terrain was horrendous, but thanks to a tip from another review I preemptively removed the rubber tips and just used the metal tip underneath for increased grip and stability. I’m roughly 85kg and definitely wasn’t being gentle with the poles and they held up phenomenally. They fold up to a really nice size and should fit in the vast majority of bags (excluding tiny 10L bags and the like, definitely 25L and above). The lock to adjust the height is incredibly easy to use and the pole itself has a height indicator in centimetres, so once you find the correct height that works for you on flats, uphills and downhills it then takes literally 2 seconds to adjust them when needed. You can also tighten / loosen the lock really easily with a spinning mechanism on the opposite side of the lock. In short, I’d highly recommend these to anybody who’s considering them, especially if you’ve never tried hiking poles before. I’m only 30 and even I noticed a drastic difference in my performance and longevity, I’ve had friends say that they’re ’an older person thing’ but after trying them I have to say that that’s complete and utter rubbish, although I can imagine the older you get the more useful they will become. Thoroughly impressed and will definitely be recommending to anybody I know who doesn’t use hiking poles!

Overall these are very well made. Came on Friday and used for serious hiking that weekend. Just a couple of things to note. I wanted to use large ferrules I already had and liked (They do come with good ferrule selection that look well made) and noted they were a loose fit so used PTFE tape and small ziplock around outside before pushing on and they were fine. More importantly I'm about 5'11". My ideal length for previous poles is 110cm 43". The suggestions are that is too short for my height but 43" is what suited me on all terrain, climbing and descending. I took a gamble and bought the larger 115cm to 135cm thinking there would be some leeway. There isnt. The lower setting really is 115cm/45". I'm ok with this, The adjustable clip is at its lowest setting so cant slide anywhere and the clip can stay a little looser as result (previous poles clips have split). The little extra length is better for downhill. All in all apart form these minor things they are great, well made, well designed and satisfying to use. Handles feel like real cork and are light but strong. I think they will last for many years used how they're intended.

I’m really impressed by these cheap poles. I usually use expensive Leki poles, but wanted something small enough to go inside my rucksack if I’m scrambling or rock climbing. I didn’t want to buy lighter, but much more expensive, carbon fibre poles, as I didn’t feel I’d use them often enough. (I mainly planned to use my robust aluminium Leki poles still.) Putting these together, I was immediately impressed by how well-made they are. They actually feel slightly lighter than my Leki’s, but pack down to a much shorter length, so they will easily fit inside my rucksack. I’m 5’3”, and have preferred to use trekking poles set at a single length for 30 years now (regardless of whether I’m going up or downhill). The shortest setting on these (buying the shorter length option) feels very slightly longer than I’d usually set my Leki’s, but they will be far better than not being able to take poles with me. The handles feel comfortable, and I like that they came with a wide variety of pole end options, Velcro to keep the folded poles together, and a handy storage bag to carry them in. It is easy to snap the pole sections together, and the resulting poles are stable and sturdy.

Great poles. Quick to assemble/put away, light to carry. I have taken these on several hikes and they are very sturdy. Cork handles are brilliant. Very good value for money. I am 5.6 and 100-120cm are the perfect size.

I bought these to replace a pair that I bought in a charity shop. They were fine, but had a twist-lock that (i) wasn't very secure and (ii) was sometimes the devil's own job to release. There are lightweight and have a very positive lock. The lock is also very easy to release. That means they're either (i) locked solid and therefore safe to put your full weight on if needs be or (ii) unlocked for folding. They are very quick and easy to both deploy and fold down. In use, they feel very comfortable and certainly do make walking a bit easier and quicker. The conventional wisdom is that you can use Nordic walking poles for trekking, but not trekking poles for Nordic walking. These are trekking poles. I have no idea what the difference between the two walking styles is and (being indifferent to organised walking groups) have no interest in finding out. (I'm a grumpy old bugger and don't want to be bored to death by retired primary headteachers or social workers.) But what I can say, is that these are an excellent walking aid when travelling the footpaths and hilly areas of Britain. There are four points to bear in mind: 1 - when off-road, remove the rubber tip and use the metal end for much better grip. 2 - take very great care to make sure that the stick is well behind your foot or you'll almost certainly trip yourself up. 3 - watch a few YouTube instructional videos and learn how to use the poles properly and safely. It will take you a few hours to become fully used to them. 4 - and this is VERY important ... grip the poles as advised. If you do it right, you can use your hands to arrest a fall in safety; do it wrong and you can guarantee a dislocated or broken thumb if you fall. A word of warning about which length you buy: take the recommended measurements seriously. I'm a tad shorter than recommended for the longer ones, but I bought them anyway. Don't make the same mistake! These are just about comfortable for me on their very shortest length. If you are less than 5' 6", get the shorter ones.

Used these a few times now, mostly for moderate difficulty walking trails. They've been solid and reliable. They stay at the adjusted length with no problems, and it is easy enough to collapse them down and store in the pack when climbing or otherwise not needing them while out on a trail. The poles are comfortable to use, although the wrist straps can get in the way a bit if you just want to hold them without the wrist strap around your wrist. The straps can chaff a little on the webbing between your thumb and finger if you hold it too close to the top. If it bothered me enough, I'd cut them off, but so far I've adjusted how I hold them and it hasn't been a big enough problem for me to worry about.
