Is this toy gray, brown, or both?

It's a mottled brown and white, but does look gray at first glance and/or from a distance. Also, the paws are solid white, and ears and muzzle are solid brown.

Personally, I wouldn't try machine washing... spot cleaning by hand would probably be best.
