Will apex detect a coin with rusted nails on top of coin??

yes. you can electronically filter out iron and ferrous materials as well as set the notch to specifically detect coins. I recommend you download the ace apex manual from the Garrett website and read it. it is extremely informative to guide you on how to search for coons and filter oou "junk" iron signals.

The coil is completely submersible as is the pinpointer. The control unit is weatherproof in light rain and cannot be submerged.

How can the battery be replaced, and does it have to be done by a Garrett dealer?

No, the Apex is simple to open up and change the batteries with, however this machine uses a Rechargeable Lithium Ion battery, so you will likely get good use out of it before you feel you need to replace it.
