When you think there's no hope left for brutal music, where every band sounds the same, Hail of Bullets comes along and just level everything with the ground. Hail of Bullets is the newest death metal sensation from the Netherlands. The group's members have played in some of the most respected death metal bands in history, including Bolt Thrower, Asphyx, Pestilence, Thanatos, Comecon and Gorefest. Considering the assembly of well-respected metal veterans, one would assume the end product to be nothing less than spectacular... and they'd be right!

Another Great Album from Hail of Bullets
Hail of Bullets returns with their second full length album "On Divine Winds" and it's just as Heavy and Brutal as ever. While the bands first album"Frost and War" focused on lyrical themes about the Russian Front of World War 2 from Operation Barbarossa to the Fall of Berlin this one is all about the Pacific Theater of the war. The album starts off with the intro track "The Eve of Battle" which is this albums equivalent to "Before the Storm" from their previous album. The track starts out relatively calm and soon leads to the sound of planes and bombs dropping as it leads into "Operation Z" which describes the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Other tracks on this album focus on different aspects of the Pacific War including the Sino-Japanese War, The Battle of Guadalcanal, and the napalm bombing of Tokyo among other topics. An improvement on this album compared to Frost and War is to me the lyrics come off more comprehensible to me than in the first. As in being able to understand more of the songs without having to check the lyrics online. Overall this is a great album without a bad song on it. A must have for fans of the bands first album and also fans of the band Bolt Thrower which share many similarities and types of lyric themes. One of the better Death Metal albums to come out this year.

Metal for History Nerds
When I think of metal bands that cover history, I immediately think of Sabaton, Exodus, and of course Iron Maiden. Hail of Bullets is credible addition to this. On Divine Winds was the first of their work that I bought as an Amazon download, due to close family connections with the Pacific War. I was not disappointed. It could be a little more clear; the growled vocals obscure the historical themes to a degree beyond those of those other bands. Still, it is a very good effort to which I listen frequently.

Crushing, Just Like the Subject Matter
First off, death metal has never really been my music du jour, but there are always exceptions. This is one of them. I am told this is quite old school death metal, the type that just washes over you with power & force. Understandable lyrics that are also amazingly well researched/ well written about the subject matter (War in East Asia). Really love the guitar work here as well as the context of the lyrics, this is certainly my surprise album for 2010.

Erstklassiger Death Metal
