I own the VVV - group thickness meter and it works fine. If there’s a big difference in price I’d get the least expensive one. Remember though, these work on metal body parts and not fiberglass or composite materials. I tested the hood on an 09 Prius and got no reading because it’s a composite type material and not metal. **Q: Would this product detect if the entire panel was replaced by an auto body shop? Isn't that a more common occurrence?** A: The paint thickness would be different from auto body painting and original factory painting. If you find significant variances or variance with one fender from rest of car then that fender was replaced. Paint thickness will probable vary within the body shop painted fender as well. I tried it on my vehicles which have no known damage and that is what it showed. Lower door panels have a plastic stick-on protection and it showed them as having damage (I expected that as the thickness of the plastic decreases the magnetic attraction). It is a good, inexpensive device to have on hand when shopping for a used car. Should be easy to identify body work that might not be visually obvious. It would be better if the device remained in the position where the magnetic tip came off the vehicle, and you pushed it back in to do another reading. Because it snaps back in when it comes off the car surface, you have to pay close attention to where it was at the moment of release. I saw a youtube video for a different product that remained out. It was more expensive and not currently in stock so I thought I would try this one.
