How well does it insulate cold/ hot foods?

The insulated material is very sturdy. It’s very good at keeping my foods hot and cold. I can pack my lunch early in the morning and by lunch time, everything is still nice and cold.

How durable is the lining? Most lunch bags have a lining that soon gets brittle and tears.

I've had it now close to a month with daily use since delivery, and I hae to say that the material is flexible (not stretchy) and appears to not become brittle with the temperature changes. I've had my box left out...back n forth between room temperature and the refrigerator and the material seems to hold well through it all. The zippers glide around the lunchbox with ease and i just absolutely love that it's got many compartments

Is this too big for a child to take to school?

For my kids no as the carry snacks , fruits sometimes lunch plus 4 bottles including juice at bottom as they have activities after school. If the child just Carries a snack juice n fruits yes it definately too big

does the side mesh pocket hold long water bottle without falling?

I put one of the deer park sport water bottles in the side mesh pocket and all it did was tilt and then fall out. Maybe if it was a different shaped bottle it might work better
