An outstanding work, that stands the test of time
Dr McCarthy's work on the earlier works of Habermas displays a deep understanding of (and affinity for) his subject. Given the erratic sequence through which Habermas's works were published in the English language, McCarthy's book was essential in avoiding the pitfalls associated with selective translations.I really enjoyed this as an undergrad; it was a quite interesting and accessible means of approaching an at times often difficult writer. Having had the opportunity to re-read this several years later I find that it actually provides a superior insight to many of the English language studies of Habermas.Any student of political philosophy, public affairs or critical theory will find this an excellent introduction to the earlier works of Habermas, and a work that will provide a useful conceptual framework through which the later works may be better understood.Highly recommended.

Best English-Language Overview of Habermas
McCarthy's book is a must-read for anyone interested in Habermas's thought. Although it was written many decades ago, the book is still essential reading, in my opinion. Habermas has written much since this appeared, but McCarthy's rigorous, clearly-written, and sympathetic exposition of his basic ideas is still (in many ways) the first place to start if you want to understand the core of Habermas's project.
