Don't Make Haruna Angry Because You Wouldn't Like Her When She's Angry
The reckless and ill advised assault on Professor Osakabe's mansion in an attempt to capture Haruna and tie up loose ends involving Design Child Makie that began in Arpeggio of Blue Steel Vol. 4 is revealed to be a rogue Army operation, born of ignorance and pride; even their political ally, Representative Kita, a former naval officer and veteran of the catastrophic Great Battle is appalled, pointing out that, "Even without their ships, those 'woman' could obliterate Japan!" The situation deteriorates further as Northern Prime Minister (and fellow Design Child) Makoto's special ops forces arrive to rescue the Osakabes. The rescue is only partially successful, and Haruna's response to the death of a single human she has barely met, is an uncontrollable berserker rage that very nearly fulfills Representative Kita's prediction. Only the last minute intervention of the long lost Admiralty Code, not seen since 1945, prevents catastrophe,...and reveals her continued existence to the rest of the Fog.The rest of the story takes place in vignettes: Byzantine Japanese politics grow more so, Nagato seeks out Zordan Stark and the U-2501 in order to ask a few questions... and make a few veiled threats. Kongou withdraws a Radar picket ship, giving the army a chance to do something else stupid, Nagara's wreckage and core have vanished, Takao and Hyuga are still dealing with the problems posed by their unrequited lust (or is it becoming something more?), Haruna and Kirishima are starting to go rogue...for little Makie's sake, and Maya, the spoiled brat heavy cruiser, is so grateful to Haruna for taking her seriously and giving her a mission (admittedly out of desperation) that she's shifted her loyalties to her from Kongou. The assault on Iwo Jima begins in Arpeggio of Blue Steel Vol. 6 . My 11-year-old daughter watched the Arpeggio of Blue Steel anime with me and loved it. When I told here there was a manga she flipped with joy and asked if we could get it. Well, she burned through the first 3 volumes on Christmas Day (when I gave them to her) and she eagerly awaits every new volume (she's bummed since it'll be January 2016 before the next volume comes out so she's trying to learn to read Japanese so she can read them sooner). The story can be a bit heavy for a tween (she hates that term) at times, but my daughter understands it's just a story and isn't real. The story is engaging enough that both my daughter and I reread these semi-regularly.

Truly Awesome Manga!
This was another great volume in The Arpeggio of Blue Steel manga series! My favorite characters are Makie, Haruna and Kirishima (with Lona right under them of course) and this volume was mainly about them which was great!
