STORY OF SEASONS: Pioneers of Olive Town - Nintendo Switch

First off, I haven’t had ANY issues with lagging, skipping, glitches etc. I have an original release grey joycon switch which I’m playing on, and I’ve had no problems running this game. To be clear though, I have the physical hard copy of the game, not a download! Not sure if it’s a different story if you downloaded it as opposed to getting the physical copy. ANYWAY— this game is amazing, I’m in love with it, I can’t stop playing it. I bought it when it was released and was a little hesitant/uncertain about it at first, so I held off on writing a review until I had actually gotten more playtime in and had more of an experience to actually review. I’ve been playing the harvest moon/story of seasons games since I was a kid, and I’m actually thrilled about this installment in the series! It has just about everything any of the older games have, plus a ton of new things added in. There are so many things to do, I’ve been playing for months and still haven’t gotten bored or hit a wall with playing it yet. One of the new things I loved was that there are all kinds of new flowers and crops in the game! Instead of having just a few per each season, there’s a whole slew of them! And, on top of that, they’re not all readily available in the general store, as some of the older games were. And, still unlike the older games, where some you had to sell a certain number of each crop to unlock others, in this game you actually have to discover some crops in the wild first and ship them out for the seeds to become available in the shop! I thought that was a fun twist—I get excited at the start of each season now, running around the map trying to find new crops to discover. Some other newer things include a bucket you can use to scoop up water leftover from rain or even try to empty out small ponds or lakes over time! This is one of those things I was hesitant about, I thought, “really? A bucket? That’s weird.” And it is! Weird and fun! At the bottom of these lakes and ponds are treasure which you can then run up to the museum with to get appraised and even donated. The museum, of course, is another new addition! As well as a beehive, where you can harvest honey yourself every few days, a ton of makers that put creation in your hands, a hydroculture plant, and one of my favorites—you can literally choose how you want to look now!! I mean, it’s been a long time coming, but we finally can look however we want to! There are a good number of options, nothing too in-depth, but there are a nice amount of customizable eye shapes, hair and eye colors, hair styles, skin tones, etc. Hopefully there will be more over time, too, but it’s a dream come true for someone who always grew up playing as preset characters that you couldn’t change a thing on! Oh, and speaking of, you can make tons of clothes and accessories now! 🥺 There’s a salon and fashion store you can unlock which allows you to create your own clothes and change how you look too, should you get tired of your hair/eyes/etc over time. There IS a harvest goddess, too, and there IS a story, it just takes some time to unlock each cutscene to meet her and get to know her. If you’re a fan of the HM/SOS series, you probably are already aware of how the game typically focuses on some form of rescuing the Goddess or reviving sprites, etc etc. It still is, just in a more relaxed, less dramatic format haha. (The harvest goddess doesn’t turn to stone as a dramatic “nobody likes me anymore!” stunt like in HM: Magical Melody anymore, is all I mean, but she is still involved in the game!) In addition, I’d like to add that I did purchase the DLC too, which isn’t too pricey and has some fun stuff in it! Although, it is COMPLETELY not necessary to get, the base game itself will still be amazing even if you choose not to get the DLC. :) Anyway, TLDR, it’s a good game and I hope you play it yourself! It really honestly deserves the hype!

For those new the genre, “Story of Season: Pioneers of Olive Town” is a farming simulation game, meaning you raise crops and livestock, fix up buildings and equipment around the farm, and interact with the citizens of the local town. A lot of time management goes into the game as well. I’ve been playing a lot of “Stardew Valley” and I was looking for a way of starting over without resetting my game, and “Story of Seasons” provided a great next generation console opportunity for that. The graphics are good, you’re able to clearly recognize what you can interact with, and have fun playful quality which makes the experience pleasant. The various menus you have to cycle through are laid out clearly so they are easy to navigate. The music and sounds also add to the fun, laid back and add to the playful atmosphere of the game. The controls are very good and it’s easy enough to perform your various farming tasks. This game has an easy mode for beginners, or if you’re like me and you’d like a more casual gaming experience. As a bonus, if you buy the cartridge, it actually comes with a full color instruction manual, which is a rare treat these days and a nice throwback. If you’re a fan of farming simulation games like “Stardew Valley” I think you will also enjoy “Story of Season”

This game is adorable. I've played Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley with my seven year old daughter. Animal Crossing was a perfect first game on her switch. Stardew Valley was loads of fun but the graphics were really crappy and the "monsters" scared her a bit. Olive Town is a beautiful blend of the two. Graphics are adorable, tasks are much easier to accomplish than on Stardew, but still challenging. Animal Crossing lacks the ability to have the farm animals and pets that my daughter enjoys keeping on her farm. Animal Crossing does have a better in game time speed. A day passes by rather quickly on Olive Town but without the penalties of getting home too late that Stardew Valley has. Age wise, I'd say a 6 yr old could navigate this game with a bit of parental assistance. Overall, I give this game 5 stars!

I have been playing Harvest Moon and Story Of Seasons games for years. If you are into cozy games, storyline games, and farm simulations, you’ll love these games! These games are great for pretty much all ages! (If you’re thinking of purchasing this game for your child, make sure they can read well, comprehend, and follow a storyline). Overall this version of the game is very cute and has fun details. There is an expansion pack that I was unaware of when I purchased this from Amazon. I just bought the expansion pack through the Nintendo eShop that was $15 extra and it worked just fine even after I had 10 hours of gameplay in the game already. While the expansion pack is cool, unless you want more marriage candidates, more outfits, and one more minor storyline, I would save your money and only get this physical copy off of Amazon. The expansion pack honestly doesn’t add much to the game, but it is fun if you’re looking for just a little bit more gameplay and exploration outside of Olive Town. Before I even purchased this game, I noticed a couple reviews saying the game got glitchy at one point… I am currently about 45 hours into the game and it is getting a bit glitchy. It’s not a bad glitch so far… it just pauses sometimes but then resumes to normal. I have tried hard rebooting my Switch just to make sure it wasn’t my system, and it is in fact within the game after you reach a certain point. Again, it’s not a bad glitch, but it is there. One thing that really bothers me within this game is it’s use of internet. There is truly no reason for this game to be using internet. The only reason it does is to show pictures people have taken within the game while on the loading screens, and for your character to “visit” other towns as an NPC (so you cannot visit the towns physically yourself, which makes it completely pointless). To my knowledge, there’s no danger or questionable motives for the internet usage, I just personally think it’s such a waste within the game. These next comments are just some minor character and storyline issues that personally bothered me, but don’t at all effect the actual game play. One of the issues I have with the game is how repetitive the NPC’s are. The dialogue is minimal outside of the cut scenes and is very repetitive. I also don’t like some of the character developments as some of their attitudes tend to be quite snobbish and rude for no apparent reason. There’s also some cut scenes that just don’t make sense as to why they’re even in the game; they start with an elaborate idea then the idea never follows through. In the end, this game is worth purchasing and is very cute. The expansion pack is even worth looking into if you truly want more to explore within the game. Just go into this game knowing it has some unfinished details that are very minor and don’t change the overall integrity of the game. I think if this game was in development for just another few months, all of these details could’ve been worked out and it would be a 5 star game for me.

Super fun but flawed cozy game.

This was sort of an impulse buy, but it’s now one of my favorite games. My all time favorite games are Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, and I feel like this is a great mixture of both of them. It’s almost exactly like Stardew, you’re a farmer that grows crops and tends to livestock, but you can also build relationships with the townsfolk and mine and fish and all of that stuff. I just cannot put this game down. I’ve seen a lot of negative reviews regarding this game, but the only negative thing I can think of is the lag. At some points in the game it can be a little laggy, but this will not deter me from playing. I think it is a very minor thing that can be fixed with updates. With all of that being said, I cannot recommend this game enough. This is my first time playing any of the Story of Seasons / Harvest Moon games, and I’m already in love! If you’re on the fence, I’d say go for it. It’s awesome! :)

Really enjoy playing this game. It’s therapeutic to just farm, mine or chop trees away, or maybe it’s just me. The goals sometimes seem long and tedious is but it’s fun in a relaxing way.

Like the others titles of the serie ! This game follows the path of the others one!

Never played Harvest Moon growing up but decided to give this a chance seeing as Story of Seasons is what it is now. Good Relaxing farming simulator with hours of fun.
