These are much darker than the filters used for most kinds of welding. If you have an old welder's helmet around the house and are thinking of using it to view the sun, make sure you know the filter's shade number."If the number is less 12, NASA recommends you don't use it. Many people find the sun too bright even at shade 12 filter, while others find it too dim at Shade 14, but shade 13 filters can be difficult to find." **Q: Will a shade 12 plus a shade 5 lens be safe for viewing the sun** A: I read that two eights will give you a 15 and an eight and a nine will give you a 16.
