The soles are no longer rubber.
I owned my first pair of Chuck Taylors about 40 years ago. About five or six years ago I bought a pair from a shoe store, and they appeared to be unchanged after all those years. Those shoes are now a bit worn so I began to look for new ones, but the ones I found in the stores now no longer have the full rubber sole like the old ones. Now the soles have two rubber pad areas surrounded by an edging of what appears to be a fibrous hard plastic. This hard material covers about half of the sole. I decided not to buy the shoes in the store, and started to look for alternatives. I was about to buy a pair of Timberland Earthkeepers (which appear to have a full rubber sole) when I saw these Chuck Taylors on Amazon with a close-up photo which clearly showed a full rubber sole without the plastic area. But when they arrived they did in fact have the new partly plastic soles. I am very disappointed and must reconcile myself to never again owning Chuck Taylors. The new soles slip on hard surfaces. Let me repeat that: These SNEAKERS slip on hard surfaces. They fail to function as they should and as they used to do.
