I don't think you'd want to weld it on, since it is to help regulate air flow. You want it to be able to spin so you can adjust the size of the vent.

going to use on a drum smoker. will they bend a little to conform to curve of drum?

I boughtt the 6" and the top of my smoker has just enough contour to where the pinwheel wont seat flush so im going with the 4". The size of my smoker is just small enough to where the 4" should be suitable enough but if youve got a real man's smoker youll want to take a different approach bc the 6" inch doesnt have much give and will probably not open or close if you shape it too much.

Ugly Drum Smoker Must Have

I am building an ugly-drum-smoker and this is a quality piece. Very heavy plate steel will last a long time. Mount on the drum lid, not on side of the drum. This is flat so it will not mount on a curved surface.

Good quality air vent

I put this air vent on my offset smoker that is 1/4" thick steel. This vent is good quality being about 3/32 " thick. I bought the 4" model but wish I had got the 6" one which would, of course, allowed more air flow. Go big as you can always adjust the air flow down.

Description conflicts steel type

Using this for a custom stainless steel smoker build. Was going for 100% stainless steel parts including all of the hardware. Mechanucally, this is working perfectly. After only two days outside, it started rusting. The ''Highlights in the description says "Inner material Stainless steel" Just beware it is not 304, 316, or 18/8 stainless. It is mild steel as stated just below the other description. I will be cleaning it and painting with high temp paint and see how it fairs.
