Is it big enough to fit a helmet?

Yes, you can put a helmet in the main body of the bag, and still have room for other necessities. There are also other pockets as well. I just used this bag on a trip from Texas to Trinidad, Colorado and it is a very nice bag to have.

How do i loosen straps to go around road glide back rest

Mine fit around back rest with no problem. Not sure what problem you could be having. You can also pick up extension straps if necessary, but it should fit without extensions.
