Q: Do you have to use the dummy battery? Or is it just a optional cable that is removeable?

I don't believe the cable is removable. The version I have connects to the Black Magic camera's 12 volt 2 pin connector (rather than dummy battery) and I need two sources of power, so the cable power's the camera, and I use a D-tap from the battery to power my monitor. If you don't want to use the dummy battery, then you can use a V- mount battery with a D-tap out... or find a version of that cable out that powers what you need.

Love this device

I've been using it a lot with my Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera and Video Assist Monitor.Just be careful when you connect D-Tap. The wrong polarity might fry your equipment.
