My freestanding fireplace is gas, not wood, but this works perfectly on it. Since it's not electric, or big, don't expect 'wind' from it. It just creates air flow to circulate the hot air from the fireplace, which it does very well. I bought this because the built in fan on my fireplace is really noisy (also electric) and this is totally silent. I definitely recommend it.
