Good book if you've lived in a cave for 20 years.
For someone who knows absolutely nothing about computers, this would be a good book. For anyone else, particularly the high school and college age student, this book is of little value. As a more mature student, who has used computers for many years, it did give me updates on some terminology and a few pieces of information but nothing I couldn't have looked up on my own. I am glad I just rented this book for class.

This book if terrible. I'm sorry if your class requires it.
This product has only one application: making your teachers life easier. This book includes a deluge of terminology that is misleading, invented by the author, or just factually incorrect. It sites defunct technologies (like Flash) as current and has sky-high level overviews of topics, but also goes into excruciating, granular detail on technologies the student is almost guaranteed to never use. Questions often precede the content that explain them, and even when properly placed are often wrong.- A vector graphic file is almost never larger than an image, in fact it is one of their advantages in many applications.- The Internet would not be depopulated without the Web, it is just a common way that a lot of content is delivered- "Progressive downloading" is almost impossible to find on the internet anymore, nearly everything is streamed- Numeric data is ABSOLUTELY used for data outside of calculations. If you store a zip-code or id number, you would almost NEVER use a string format.I am honestly at a loss for who this book is for. It disgorges so many facts with no clear thematic or conceptual goal that a beginner would likely be lost as to why they're memorizing how many bits are in a MIDI message or the various stages of 3d animation. Intermediate students will wonder why they are learning what .doc files are, changing Windows notification settings(?) and how to unzip folders. Advanced students will tear out their hair at the many concepts that are obscured or misrepresented. This text reeks of an author with little technical experience and less writing skill. That which is technically accurate is vague, and will often lead you to incorrect assumptions; you might actually damage your understanding of some CS subjects by reading this.

Don't get the eBook unless you are ONLY using your phone
I needed this book for my CIS101 class. I'm currently pregnant, so having all of my textbooks on my kindle is a million times easier than carrying around the physical copy. In the past, I have been able to buy the kindle edition of a book and read it on my phone, computer, tablet AND kindle. HOWEVER, this has not been the case. I rented the textbook in kindle format for about $30 thinking that would be the easiest way to go. Literally the only place I can access it is my phone. I got the KINDLE format and yet I cannot open it any where other than my phone. Not the computer, not anywhere else. Only my phone where it is incredibly too small to read. A disclaimer would've been appreciated. There goes $30 that could've gone towards literally anything else, but now I have to spend an ADDITIONAL $40 to rent a physical copy that I won't get for two weeks. No, I didn't buy it off Amazon. They have enough of my money.
