A couple of years or so ago I decided that I could use a robust every-day watch; I always have had an interest in watches and time pieces, with mechanical movements in particular. Been lucky enough to indulge that interest with some good watches over many years. An Invicta from Amazon seemed to offer rugged service use at a good price. Well sometimes, you get just what you pay for, and no more. My first Invicta kept good time for about a year; that is, until the winder stem came adrift. However, I liked the design of the Invicta, much like a R***x, so decided to splash out on a more expensive Swiss movement equipped model of similar design, again a disappointment, time keeping became slower and slower and then it stopped for no apparent reason after three months. Invicta service was non-existent, no reply to service enquiry, so Amazon took the latest Invicta back and made a full refund, so Invicta nil, Amazon 10! I then saw the Citizen AT4008-51E at an attractive price on Amazon. I can only agree and endorse the many favourable reviews of this Citizen watch, build quality appears impeccable. It is difficult to find anything new to add to so many articulate positive reviews. Of the few less than enthusiastic reviewers, thought is, among those may be some from buyers who would be more comfortable with a simpler instrument. I personally like its appearance, the face is clear, not too blingy, and time legible in all light levels, good eyesight not to be taken for granted as so many years pass. Reassurance is available at a touch of a button, that the time, day and date displayed are precisely correct to within 1 second, and the power reserve is adequate. It keeps itself totally accurate wherever in the USA or Europe you may find yourself. You may need to reset the hour reference position for useful radio update, “LON”mode selected, for coverage across mainland Europe, the manual explains how to do that. During a recent 12 day trip in a part of the world where no radio signal can be received by this watch, and temperatures were challenging, its quartz movement kept time to within 2 seconds of absolute accuracy for the duration. Good reliability may be anticipated; the Eco-Drive energy acquisition system appears to utilise no moving parts; most energy capture in watches seems to involve large moving parts and associated gear trains. The elimination of those mechanical moving parts must surely contribute to reliability with a reduced need for periodic cost and inconvenience of lubrication and servicing. This philosophy may also explain the fact that the minute hand advances at 15 second intervals, a potential saving of perhaps 30 million mechanical movements a year. There is a generous manufacturer's 5 year guarantee. Furthermore, once charged, if the watch is not exposed to light, it will go into “hibernation” mode and still retain sufficient energy to keep functioning accurately for several months. You will be lucky to get a few days of power reserve from even the best mechanical movements. I am delighted with my purchase, I find that it is an excellent instrument. For purpose, it is a superior time-piece to those costing many times the price of this Citizen, this watch lacks only the doubtful kudos and ostentation associated with the wrist ornaments from the much advertised and “exclusive prestige” brands. If you feel you can bear to forego those benefits, then enjoy an AT4008-51E, it will be for sure as accurate, versatile and robust, probably more so, than the other guy's ostentation. He shelled out perhaps 70 times as much, or more, for his “certified chronometer” status symbol, how smart is that? This watch is to watches what an SMS is to a GPO telegram; give yourself a pat on the back for the intelligent purchase of a truly 21st century time-piece! It truly is superb value, you won't be disappointed!

I had always wanted an ECO-DRIVE Citizen watch, and had been looking at them on Amazon for a few months. I finally settled on this watch for two features: a) ECO-DRIVE b) Radio Controlled Atomic Time This watch looked fantastic online, and in all reviews I read/watched, and when I received it, I was not disappointed... if anything, this watch looks better in person than even the professionally produced marketing vid by Citizen themselves!! The watch worked right out of the box, and after switching to "NYC" timezone, it was more or less right on time. I am a bit far (right on the stated edge of the radius) from the tower in Colorado. Having read a few other reviews, I knew that it might not be able to receive the radio signal every night, but I have absolutely received the signal... the radius of the tower is approximately 3000km, and I am about 2900km from the tower.... if you are much further than this, you may not receive the radio signal with enough strength to update the time at 2am every night... so having known that, it was expected, and not enough to take a star away... Five stars all the way, very satisfied. Also, fulfilled and sold by Amazon is always great.

So I've had this watch for less than 12 hours, so I'll do a follow up if I have issues down the road, but so far i'm extremely satisfied with this purchase. The fit and finish is perfect. No defects, scratches, off centered or miss printed lettering or tick marks. Very nice packaging, watch stand fits in nicely on any dresser or night stand for safe keeping (as if this thing will ever leave my wrist :) ) Like others have said pictures don't do it justice. The combination of polished and brushed steel along with the subdials really give it a nice sparkle effect as you move it around and light bounces off at different angles. I have large wrists & hands and not only does the size of the watch look perfect on my wrist, it also fit perfectly out of the box. I was concerned it would be too small for my 7 3/4 wrist, but it fits just perfectly. Maybe a little snug when it's hot and humid but otherwise indoors I can either slide it up a bit and have it stay in place, or work it toward my arm a little to give a little room to let the skin breath and not get clamy. Over all feels great wearing it. Nice hefty feel but doesn't restrict arm or hand movement. dials don't dig into wrists, etc. All of the features work like a charm and the combination of classic styling with high-tech under the hood is a great match for someone who likes gadgetry but wants a little flash vs. a teched out casio. The day of week, 24 hour, and timezone dials are easy to read even though they are marked to perform several functions. I think my favorite feature is the easy timezone settings and switching between them. Really cool to see the dials spinning around on there own when switching from say NYC and LON. Also does the same when setting the alarm, or when it uses the second hand to convey other information like DST on and off. Another kind of hidden/hack feature I found is dealing with UTC time. If you work in IT and have servers running on UTC or for whatever reason, you can switch to the london timezone and disable DST on that particular timezone and bam you have GMT year round. The illumination works pretty well so far, was kind of faint at first when using it in the dark tonight (after minimal time outside it's box) but it was still easy to read the time, but then I hit it with a super-bright weapon-attachment-class flashlight for a few seconds and it was glowing very bright and still has a good shine a few hours later. In the daylight the glow in the dark parts don't look green or anything and blend in well with the rest of the watch. I'm in the Atlanta area and was getting the time to sync was a bit hit or miss during the day but around 11 it finally picked up the signal and manually synced. I think the signal works better later at night when it does the auto-synch, will keep an eye and see how successful it is at getting the update every night, but as long a I get one once a every couple of weeks the time will be accurate within imperceptible range. UPDATE: Next day I checked the status and it synced just fine with a high signal level. The chronograph works well and is useful when you need something like that in an ad hoc fashioned, but would probably use a dedicated stop watch or a digital sports watch if planning to use it a lot. It's a little cumbersome to get into chrono mode (pull the crown, turn to chrono mode, push crown back in) but then stop/start and reset are simple to use. If timing for more than a min (can go up to 60min) it is kind of hard to see the minute markings in the small circle. (for me at least you may have better vision) I did kind of impulse buy this watch, but having since compared to many other watches in this range and even those 3x - 10x the price I've been hard pressed to find another that matches this package for my needs. One thing I'll say though is that if you can't get reception from a timezone tower, there are others that are pretty much the same watch but without that feature for about half the price. Should be good to go anywhere within the continental US, but maybe go down to the mall first and see if you can manually sync one in your area, or be pepaired to order then exchange for the cheaper one if not to get the best value for your money Hope that helps!
