This reduces the bulk of drips in clear coat pretty effectively. I use this in order to reduce and level the drip before beginning use of a scraper or razor blade. The wooden handle makes it much easier to keep perfectly level no as not to gauge the paint, or leave a deep scratch. It does what it says it does. This tool should be used with great care in conjunction with a scraper and leaving enough of whatever the defect you are removing to subsequently wet sand to perfection. If you scrape or file you're in perfection until it's level with the paint job , then you will be unable to blend the repair into the rest. There will be no depth to the paint or clear coat to allow fine sanding.

If you touch up your car's paint with a small brush or get dirt or bugs in fresh sprayed paint, a nibbing file is a good tool to carefully knock the high spots off and then polish the finish to a gloss shine. Sanding of the high spots will also remove paint from the surrounding area that is not overly thick and can sand through to the primer. A nibbing file, used with a light touch on a flat or convex surface, will just remove the nub without affecting the surrounding area. Can't use on a concave area as the edges of the file will scratch. This file works well with care and experience, and it's priced much lower than one from a professional body shop tool dealer. Great for the part timer or occasional painter.

It works well on nibs. My only issue (which isn’t too much of an issue) is that the file is on only one side of the metal. The side against the wood (the metal is held on by magnets) is flat so it can’t be used if the file gets clogged or worn. I actually do more woodworking than auto body and it probably will be useful for polyurethane runs too.

For those that do not want to read the whole thing. DO NOT BUY, IT DESTROYS PAINT/CLEAR! A nib file, by construction... is a FILE. HOWEVER! You cannot cut a FILE, into 10 pieces and sell it as a nib file. That is what this product is. A COMMODITY... METAL FILE, CUT INTO PIECES! If you see file teeth on the SIDE of a nib file... it is NOT A NIB FILE. It is a cut up METAL FILE. And you cannot do that. Because, as I said, a nib file by definition and design IS A FILE, however, what MAKES A FILE... is the TEETH. And you cannot USE crappy Chinese files on PAINT. The teeth need to be cut PERFECTLY FLAT, no notches, gouges, or undulations. It also needs to be breech cut, not mechanically cut. When you mechanically cut a tooth on a file, you create sawtooth edge down the whole tooth. You cannot have that on a nib file. This nib file left HORRENDOUS gouges of about 120-180 grit size. Which ruined the paint. A good nib file, will BARELY LEAVE, 600ish grit lines. A great one, leaves NO scratches at all, typically. The reason you came to Amazon to look for a nib file, is the file brand you need to buy, if you're doing professional work. It is custom made, it is worth its expensive cost. If you are working on a personal car, there is an inexpensive one that will be good enough. It's not this one. Look for the yellow/orange holder. And look at the sides. "Smooth, non-toothed side", it is a better chance it is good quality.

Very easy to use

Nice tool for removing paint runs. Now it does require some skill and patience. Wont fix laziness or bad prep work. Also paint or clear has to be nice and cured. Then I gently let this slide over the surface with very little pressure allowing the tool to do the work. Read that again. Let the tool do the work! If you press on this like a gorilla you will gouge at the edges causing more repair work. I work the run until about 80% is gone then finish with fine wet sand paper. Most bad reviews and due to people not using this properly. If your impatient painting isnt for you anyways.

I got it to remove the top of a hardened blob of tree sap from a car's exterior paint. While it did that job OK, I was disappointed in the file's teeth. They were very irregular and uneven. Not what I, as former machinist, would consider a proper file.

Se debe tener la técnica y el cuidado exacto para no dañar la pintura.

Shaves down imperfections just as it claims, but definitely leaves scratches in the finish that take a lot of wet sanding to get out. Could have been that my clear wasnt cured enough, but had cured for a whole day in a heated shop, and specs for the clear say you can sand within two hours.

Came with a hole drilled in file with burrs around the hole was defective as far as doing the job it was intended for
