How often do the tips need to be replaced? my radioshack 40 watt iron was always melting tips.

I've put about 3 oz of solder through the original tip (mostly 60/40 flux core) and I also occasionally take 220 grit sandpaper to keep the tip nice and shiny (I've owned this iron for about 2 years). The tip still looks brand new once cleaned up a bit.

There is no firm correlation between wattage and temperature. Don't waste your money. Get an iron with actual feedback controlled temperature control. You cannot calibrate this for temperature. Tip temperature at any given wattage setting will depend on room temperature and will drop quickly when you actually try to solder using this. Then it takes a long time to come back up to temperature.

could i swithc out the iron and plug a differnt soldering iron in if i wanted?

Yes. I've used several different soldering irons in it. I wouldn't go over a 40 watt iron. My old switchable 15/30 watt works very well with it. Don't leave it on high to warm up unless your watching it. First time burned the solder off the iron. Had to re tin it. Yup it get Hot 😆😊

How long does it take to heat up enough to work with?

Under 5 mins? Turn the dial to the far right and turn it on. Heats up too much then just turn down the dial.
