Gives us the knowledge to make our own decisionsโฆ
This book is not about perfection, itโs about giving us the knowledge to help improve our health wherever we are at in our life today.Iโve been listening to Shawn for years through his The Model Health Show Podcast where he interviews experts that are known from all over. He has helped me in so many more ways than heโll ever know. Heโs information has provided me the foundation I needed to heal my own body after dealing with health issues for years. Through his teachings heโs got be fascinated with the health of our bodies using nutrition, sleep, exercise, and more. Over the last five years, I have read and listened to more than 4,000 hours of books and podcasts that cover nutrition and health. Itโs obvious heโs spent years of researching and consolidating peer-reviewed evidence-based studies, so we donโt have to. So thankful for all he has done for me and others through his teaching. There have been so many books Iโve wanted and tried to share with family and friends, but I knew it would be too overwhelming for them. In Eat Smarter, Shawn does a wonderful job, as always, at breaking everything down in a way that itโs easy for others to digest the information and really understand what is going on within you body. He covers how your hormones work, or are suppose to work, along with how different foods affect our bodies. Within, Eat Smarter he breaks down the myths we have been taught throughout our life while providing us highlights from fascinating studies. He also throws in some great humor to keep it fun and entertaining. For anyone looking to improve loose weight, improve gut health, or wants to just learn more of how the body communicates this is the book for you! He does a great job at staying high level to keep the amount of information digestible. He also provides a game plan for long-term lasting success in staying healthy along with delicious and tasty recipes that give you great nutrition, too.He gives us the information we need to make educated food decisions and not subscribe to a specific diet as we have been taught in the past. Makes me curious and think of even more questions I would love for him to cover in Eat Smarter Too (fingers-crossed).

Page turner
Shawn Stevenson combines real life vignettes, incredible science, and plenty of analogies to tie it all together. I laughed out loud many times reading, I connected with his upbringing and misconceptions around diet and health, and in general was able to follow the technical aspects. This book feels to me like a compilation of all the great books I have read, merging science and practicality, but taking out the one-size-fits-all and fanaticism of most programs. He offers a great plan that actually has flexibility and a focus on connection with others and mental health. I donโt think in all my reading has an author combined so many healthful ways of living AND encouraged their readers to have grace for the bumps they will have. When he said to shoot for 80% compliance, I was intrigued. When he said to change macros around for what feels right for my body and my life schedule, I was in! Intermittent fasting isnโt new, nor is the idea that low carb can be healthier for more people, as well as the need for pre- and probiotics. This truly felt like he took a lot of different ways of eating healthy and combined them in a manageable lifestyle.I have to say the most important part to me was the section on eating together as a family. Iโm not a great cook, I do my best but it isnโt always up to the standards I set for myself, but to know that sitting down with my kids each day to share dinner, and with my husband on the weekends when he isnโt working is a POSITIVE and HEALTH-AFFIRMING choice not only for me but to be a good influence on my kids made my heart swell. I have decided to be healthy to be a better example for my children, and this section helped me to see ways that Iโm already doing well, even if there are other ways I can improve. In fact, I sat down and talked with my kids about eliminating candy and soda or juice and read part of the book to them about sugar. We discussed the natural desire for sweets, and came up with a plan to make flavored kombucha for each of us (we already like โboochโ and brew it at home, but Mt Dew flavored? That will be a first!) and to bake cookies and cake with added healthy nutrients. Explaining that itโs natural to want sweets but that candy and juice bring no nutrients was helpful to my kids, AND not cutting them off cold turkey will help us all to be on board. Plus having them help bake will help me ๐I read this book in less than a week. I feel empowered and affirmed. I want to be healthy as a family and this book truly spoke to me at my level. Iโm so thankful for the message and the heartwarming stories.

Nutrition, Science, and Humor, oh my!!
I didn't know I could laugh and learn about nutrition at the same time. This book was so fun to read! And, I learned SO MUCH. I'm a certified Health Coach and Functional Nutrition Counselor, all around health geek, and this book showed me there is so much more to know. It's really hard to break down super complex nutrition and health concepts and share it in an entertaining, interesting way that anyone can understand and relate to. This book addresses fad diets, popular beliefs and common misconceptions, spirituality, lifestyle, Politics of food, and the truth of nutrition and human function based off science, research and Shawn's personal experience. Want to know what to eat? Read this book!In addition to the information provided, I got recipe recommendations and access to the 30 day Eat Smarter plan. Obviously I haven't done it yet but I plan to check it out. I appreciate that there are actionable things provided for readers in addition to the information and education provided in the book.I've been a big fan of Shawn and the Model Health Show for years. Reading this book solidified that Shawn is at the top of the Nutrition Science game and understands people and how complex food can be. I wish it were as simple as "Eat your Veggies", but it's just not. Getting some guidance for how to navigate nutrition in such an entertaining, understandable, non-judgmental way is really refreshing.

The most important book out right now for your health and your weight
This is a complete, well-thought, and entertaining guide that will teach you all about food and how eating certain foods WILL help you reach your health goals, whether it is to lose weight, have more energy, have greater focus and clarity, and just be able to do more with your life. It's all about the food!Don't worry about lots of rules and unrealistic expectations. You will learn what to add to your diet more so than what to eliminate."Food does provide fuel, but it's also meant to be enjoyed".I've highlighted all over my copy of this book and purchased more to give to my family. I am recommending it to all of my functional nutrition clients and colleagues. It is just that important! If you read one health and wellness book in 2020, make sure it is this one!As you read this book, it truly feels like a labor of love. Shawn Stevenson is a beast when it comes to RESEARCHING FACTS based in science. I believe nearly every single page of this book references at least one study that proves the information he is sharing. Shawn truly wants to help as many people as possible get out of this mess of fake foods that we are living in today. And his charm is apparent through his writing style. Yes, there is a lot of science, but it is lightened up with loads of pop culture references and metaphors to keep you hooked and reading. If I haven't already made it apparent, this book holds really, really important information for anyone that eats anything. No one diet is for everyone but everyone has their own unique diet. Shawn helps you navigate throughout this book, including a 30 Day Plan to get you started.

Funny, educational and easy to understand. What more could you want?
Shawn Stevenson has been a life changing figure in my life for several years. My behavior around health and fitness and mental wellness have changed so much because of him over the years, always in small ways that amount to a lot. His biggest gift is taking research and higher level concepts and breaking them down to a point where any one could understand the concept. AND he does it all while making you laugh, sometimes to the point of almost crying.Of course, he brings these gifts into his writing. Throughout the entire book you learn how our body works with food to bring us optimal health, in the easiest to understand ways. Shawn gives you nuggets of wisdom and information you can take from every page, and makes you laugh with pop culture or food references in nearly every paragraph. My favorite, Shawnโs book doesnโt just stop at the relationship between food and our bodies. He pushes us continually to be the best humans we can be and to help us achieve ultimate mental health as well. He pushes us to improve our relationships with ourselves and other to achieve maximum health. You will love this book and I guarantee will read it more than once. Have a highlighter and little notebook ready to take away all the nuggets of info you donโt want to forget. Thank you Shawn for continuing to make us better humans for ourselves and others!

This book is a must have for anyone interested in eating. Ever.
These days itโs easy to feel lost in a sea of information, especially when it comes to health and nutrition. Shawn has changed the entire game with Eat Smarter. In the book you will constantly read โaccording to a study published in the journal of -insert peer reviewed publication here-. He takes hundreds of pages and articles and condenses them down into an easy to read format, weaving the material together in a cohesive manner that just makes sense and makes you feel excited to learn more implement the knowledge into your life. This book makes you realize thereโs a whole lot more going on with our health and wellness in terms of food that isnโt being spoken about, but itโs laid out in a way thatโs easy to understand and it gives you the desire to make small changes in your daily routine. My favorite part is Shawn never tells you what you MUST do. He shares the sciences. He reminds you how unique your own body and metabolic blueprint is from others.. And he ENCOURAGES you take the information he is providing and test it out to see how you, as an individual, will feel.We all know there is no one size fits all way of eating. Shawn doesnโt just remind us of that: he gives us permission to step into our greatness and take ownership of the things we can control so that we can feel better in our own bodies and function optimally. This book is a must have for anyone interested in eating. Ever.

Something good
For beginners in the science of food it is a good book. But, for those who already have some knowledge about good food and what scientific research says, he adds little. it is still a good read, we always learn something new and reinforces a lot that we already know.

Good to read
The book is amezing, book size is big, price is acceptable, but the quality of the hard cover could be better. Great work Shawn Stevenson.
