what makes these strings so special?

Obviously much of this is subjective, I use them only on my strats...I have used fenders, DRS, Ernie Ball, Elixir and others over the years, and these just do it for me. The other key thing is the hybrid string guages, these are 10-12-16-28-38-48, so they get a little heavier as they go down....and on a half step tuned down strat with the right amp, I closer to those Hendrix or SRV tones than I've ever been, but I'm not killing my fingers with 11's. Haven't broken one yet, and they last a good time with great tone. Price is about the same as any of the others. My strats have never sounded this good. I'm not trying to sound like Gilmour by the way....

Managed to snap the high E string while tuning it for the first time with the new strings. Any way to replace just the one versus buying a new pack?

They will replace the WHOLE pack if you ask them since "part" of it was defective from what you're stating. Just setup a return and they'll ship a new pack right out.

Won't these strings throw the guitar's intonation off if you normally use a regular set of 10s?

No they will not. The intonation is fine tuning the length of each of the string mounts so that the string vibrates in the same note when you play the string open and when you play the string at the 12th fret. Once intonation is set correctly, the common string brands and sizes will all work because the string length is set by the guitar. Hook up your tuner and tune each string as usual, then leave the tuner on and fret the 12th location and the tuner should read the same in tune note as the open string did.
