The ones I received have bearings.

Q: Do these have to be mounted on the side of the bench leg, or can they be mounted inside the leg?

For stability they should be mounted on the outside of the leg, but if you can reach them to step on the lever you could try it. Just don't have too much weight on the bench till you are sure it will work.
