Fixes almost all the problems with the 3GS Defender, adds a few (minor) new ones
I love this case! The silicone is so pleasant to hold, and the case has easily weathered a few fumbles already.Same as the 3GS Defender, this case is not airtight, waterproof, or otherwise completely sealed. Grit, hair, dust, and liquids can get in and scratch the screen, so I recommend taking the case apart and cleaning it and the phone every 90 days or so.Unlike the 3GS Defender, the 4/4S hybrid Defender follows the form of the original phone much more closely *and* has a stiffer silicone exterior so I almost don't notice that my phone is now twice as thick. The cutouts are very well placed, and the new silicone mixture means the home button and power button are not nearly so mushy-feeling to press. Also, the textured back side of the silicone case lets my phone rest more firmly on smooth surfaces, and is actually very pleasant to the touch. The whole case feels like a perfectly fit glove, with all the right bits covered, and all the right bits uncovered; the phone is held very solidly in place, and does not shift or wiggle at all, so far as I can tell. The new mostly-plastic front (as opposed to mostly silicone) has pros and cons: the silicone just barely hangs on to the barest edge of the phone, but Otterbox engineered them to stick far more solidly than the 3GS, even with less coverage. Also, they removed the tiny sliver of silicone that gradually stretched and distorted underneath the 3GS' front sensors (worse than it sounds). The new headphone jack has a much larger anchor than the 3GS (which almost tore off after only 9 months or so of casual use), so it is much less likely to tear off entirely. If you have your headphones in most of the time, the 4/4S jack cover twists the thin plastic edge so when your headphones aren't in, the cover barely closes, and then the top lip doesn't even connect to the plastic inner case for a few minutes while it slowly reshapes. This will probably become a permanent deformity in a few more months for me, but I do leave in my headphones for maybe 20 out of 24 hours. The connector cover has similar issues, but I use the connector far less often, and the silicone has a much larger anchor over the bottom of the case. The 3GS Defender allowed me to effectively mute my phone by covering the hole over the bottom speaker, but the same maneuver with the 4/4S Defender is just about totally ineffective. This has pros and cons -- sometimes I had to hold the phone very awkwardly to avoid "muting" it, but it was also much quicker to lower the volume to talk to someone for just a few seconds without pausing or fiddling with the phone itself. The plastic inner shell seems much more solid and tightly fit to itself than the 3GS Defender, but where the 3GS nearly perfectly aligned to the screen, the 4/4S requires me to press firmly (sometimes quite hard) on the edges and corners to register a touch, where the 3GS needed only a light tap. I'm sure a folded piece of paper would fix that when I open my case next for cleaning. [Note: This is a problem on both sides -- the Apple logo has its own mini-protector that seems to be the same material as in front, and it also is clearly not touching the logo most of the time, unless it is pressed down. The plastic on the inner case is very tightly shut, with no wiggle room left to press the halves more closely together, so I'm assuming this is intentional, or manufacturing error. Caveat emptor.]The 4/4S integrated screen protector solved one of my most hated problems with the 3GS Defender: greasy spots! I doubt grease was actually involved, but unless I used a small amount of baby powder lightly dusted over the screen, the 3GS screen protector would stick to the phone and look like a greasy mud puddle, especially in bright light or sunlight. Now I don't have to choose between baby powder dust on my screen or greasy distortion lines on my screen! The 4/4S screen protector is completely free of this problem, and my phone's screen has never been more clear! (Also, holy crap, retina displays look AMAZING.)The 4/4S NAILED the belt clip this time around. I broke parts on my original 3GS' clip so many times that I had to cannibalize working parts from both my clip *and* my wife's clip, so the thing was a horrible pink-and-black Frankenstein's monster after two years. Also, the plastic from the 3GS' actual case was wearing thin, so the phone was starting to slip out of the case more easily than it should. I probably would have needed a new 3GS Defender for year three. The 4/4S, on the other hand, is perfect: the clips to hold the phone in place are more rugged, deeper, and better integrated into clip; the clip now cradles the side of the phone, so it is far more stable in its usual sideways position on my belt; the actual part of the clip that keeps the whole shebang from slipping off (that little tail bit that loops under and is opposite the hinge) is now reinforced so I should have no problems with that falling off entirely like I did with the 3GS; even the position that the clip is angled at is more firmly held, so it doesn't rotate at will from a light brush (like while putting on a coat). Now the clip does limit the number of positions that leave my phone useful, as I don't have an integrated iPhone remote/microphone on my headphones. The case can hide the volume buttons entirely, and the headphone jack when opened can make the phone a bit harder to insert properly. Also, since the phone now sits sideways, I have to be more precise in seating the phone first, and usually have to look down to make sure I've aligned it correctly before snapping it in place. Small sacrifices, though, compared to how much more stable the whole thing is now -- I can run full out without having to clutch at my belt to keep my phone from popping out onto the highway (true story!).Basically, this case fixed nearly all the awkward points and design flaws that the 3GS case had, and added tons of smartly-placed refinements. There are a few niggles to be had, but they are really very minor considering that I'm a huge klutz who would have destroyed my iPhones dozens of times over from butterfingers, had I not had these amazing Defender cases. Now I love my Otterbox nearly as much as my 4S: my case finally feels like it's part of my phone, not just there to protect it.

exactly what I expected
I had an OtterBox Defender Case for iPhone 3G, 3GS (Black)[Retail Packaging ] for my iPhone 3GS, so purchasing one for my iPhone 4 wasn't much of a leap. I was a bit nervous because of the design changes (both with the phone and the case) and claims that less than retail pricing for these cases would result in getting a fake Otterbox. I am pleased that I just received an authenic Otterbox Defender (from seller Excell) and it fits beautifully on my phone. Installation took less than two minutes and I was ready to walk out the door! I am confident that the case will protect my phone from those every day "oops" moments. The colors match what I expected from the computer screen too (apparently not true for other reviewers). There is a small watermark on the screen, but I was so used to it from my previous phone that I don't even notice it anymore. The holster seems tough and with the phone facing out you can make calls and such. However, the holster covers the entire backside of the devise meaning you can't use the camera or light while it is in the holster. Since I use my camera so frequently, I'm choosing not to use the holster on a regular basis. Instead, I was able to figure out how to use the holster as a mount in my car though and I am very happy about this new option!I was tempted to get an Otterbox Commuter Series Hybrid Case for iPhone 4 & 4S - Retail Packaging - Black , but was afraid that the lack of protection on the back (for the Apple logo) would allow dirt to be introduced into the case. I don't care if the Apple logo gets scratched, but I don't want the cameras or touchscreen to be damaged. The Defender for the 3GS seemed to cover everything with a screen protector. When I purchased the Defender for my iPhone 4, I assumed that everything would be covered, but I was wrong. I am disappointed in this. I can't necessarily fault the product itself, merely the lack of information that I had when making the decision to purchase the case. It will be interesting to see if I notice any additional debris with this case. The only reason that I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I am not convinced that the silicone port covers will stand the test of time. The Defender for the 3GS was very rugged (and bulky). The new Defender is certainly slimmer, but I don't know if it will stand all the tugging from daily charges, silencing, and headphone usage.Update 1/18/2013After using the product for two weeks, I was disappointed in the silicone layer significantly moving every time I took the phone out of my pocket. While this didn't necessarily compromise the protection of the case, it was annoying to continually adjust the silicone all around phone, especially around the ports. I have switched to a LifeProof Case for iPhone 4/4S - Retail Packaging - Black case and hope that it is a better fit for me.

Amazing Knockoff! It's quite impressive how close they got it to the original!
I got this for my wife as I already had a black one for myself, purchased in-store from Best Buy. I was really happy to get one at this price but noticed that the rubber felt a bit chalky compared to mine, not quite as grippy. I decided to take a closer look.First, the packaging: They both have a holographic sticker on the top - a true sign of a legitimate product, right? Not quite. The iPhone4 & 4S on the front is a sticker on the one I purchased from Best Buy but is printed right on the plastic packaging on this Pink/Plum version. Also, if you take a real close look, the drawing of the otter in the logo lacks some fine detail compared to the original version, which is usually the case when printing from a high quality scan vs using the original vector art. There are subtle differences in the thickness of the font/text but only sticklers like myself would notice. And we usually just throw out the packaging anyway, so this stuff isn't really important. I'm just impressed with the work they put into it!Next, the case itself: The diamond texture on the back and the Otter Box text logo are nearly perfect! The only giveaway is when looking directly at the front of the original, you can't see the plastic tabs all around the sides, except for the two immediately to the left and right of the screen. You can see them on the knockoff. Viewed from the side, the edge on the front is actually rounded towards the screen vs the original, which is a little more squared off. Combined with the less grippy, chalky rubber surface I mentioned earlier, in some ways this is better than the original as it would be easier to slide in and out of pockets. When you're holding it in your hand though, the knockoff feels like it can potentially slip, due to the quality of the rubber. Now for the belt clip. Since I don't use this myself, I didn't think to compare the two until now. The knockoff has an "oily" feel and the texture on the back appears a little rougher and does not have as fine a grain. The diamond pattern on the actual clip part looks alright, but shinier compared to the original, due to the different plastic used. The real kicker here is the Otter Box text logo - the tiny BOX part of the logo is really muddy and nowhere near as sharp as on the original. All that said, we still got this knockoff for half the price that I got mine at Best Buy. If I didn't already have an original to compare it with, I wouldn't have known any better! For all intents and purposes, this is an Otterbox case (in form and function) but it's not the real deal. If you don't mind not getting a genuine Otterbox, this is a great deal!EDIT (August 21, 2013):I just noticed that this item, as of this date, is "Sold by PADFA and Fulfilled by Amazon." I had purchased mine from VancouverTech, so this review might not apply to other resellers - other vendors may very well be selling the real deal. It could also be that Otterbox itself had changed the formula for the rubber they used, used another printer for their cases, etc. meaning the one I got was still actually genuine. I assume that they did not do this though and still believe I got a very high quality knockoff.

Brilliant protection for your iphone
This is the second Otterbox case I have bought for my iPhone. I bought it as I do tend to be quite rough with my phone. I've got horses and so it comes out with me in all weathers, gets dropped on concrete (pretty much daily, oops!), gets nibbled by horses and is in my pocket if I fall off. So I needed a case that would provide really good protection... and the Otterbox has!Without this case, I doubt my phone would have lasted to a week old, I drop it quite often screen downwards and it is constantly covered in hay/dust etc. But when I take the case off, the phone is as good as new, there isn't a single scratch on it!The case does make the phone quite bulky, so it can be a pain to fit in your pocket if you're wearing jeans, but it's worth that for the protection if provides. The only reason I have given this product a 4 instead of a 5 if that the rubber outer layer has not lasted very well. The first Otterbox I bought (in January 2012) lasted a few months in tact but then the rubber covering the home key split and eventually fell off. Next, the bit of rubber covering the power cable port at the bottom fell off. Then as time went on the rest of the rubber also started to split until it was coming off the plastic casing completely and I had to buy a new Otterbox. However, the fact that I am buying another Otterbox shows that this hasn't put me off,and I still think it is the best case out there. Plus replacing the case every year is much cheaper than replacing my phone!

Excellent case
After reading several of the bad reviews regarding the OtterBox, I purchased directly from Amazon and looked closely at the case before attempting to placing my iPhone 4 into it. It is pretty clear that this case is not a knock off. It was very hard to pull the silicone away from the box. I examined the inside of the silicone case and found none of the 'glue' issues. The hard case was exactly as it should and easy to place the iPhone into. There were no gaps and fit appropriately. Putting the outside silicone case back on was easier than taking it off until getting the outside edges appropriately fitted. I find that the OtterBox case to be awesome and would recommend it to anyone who has kids!

Protects my phone from my toddler
Brilliant Product! My toddler accidently smashed the screen on my last Iphone by dropping it so I invested in this case. I researched into which type was the toughest and I have been very impressed with this one, its been dropped already and no damage at all!The colour combination is nice because it gives my phone a slightly more feminine look and makes it easy to find in my bag amongst all the baby stuff!I also find it slips in and out of my pocket well, my husband didn't choose defender series and his gets annoyingly stuck because his case is so rubbery.Otter Box cases are really good.
