For your 12x16 dance floor, you can purchase 1 or 2 devices depends on the height you will hang it. If use multiple devices, you can use one remote controller to adjust them.

Can you keep this on a single pattern or does it always change?

It is always changing. You cannot stop the wheel inside that is splitting the laser. There is no button on the remote for that. The other "answers" are incorrect.
