This might be stupid...is replacing this whole assembly the only/best option, or can the rods be replaced separately?

You should purchase the whole assembly that has the proper factory set gap. This type of ignition system is very sensitive to voltage drops that will occur if the rod doesn’t get hot enough. In addition, the gas orifice can get clogged over time. For your family’s safety, don’t play around with gas fired devices to save time or a few dollars!!!! Make sure the two wires are connected to the proper location, so take a picture of the old one before you remove it.

Will this replace the assembly on my heatilator cd4842m series fireplace, s/n ga1694685, oem part #4021-324?

4021-324 is a side mounted bracket. I would use what they spec for it. We have almost all of them on Amazon.

If it looks exactly like what you have and mounts the same way it should work. It is critical that it mounts correctly or you may have a delayed ignition. If you are not skilled at this you should for your safety hire a professional to repair your fireplace. Gas is not something that forgives mistakes.
