A Concise Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament (Eerdmans Language Resources (ELR))

Even though there are a great number of electronic language tools out there, sometimes it is nice to get away and do hands-on translation with a grammar and a lexicon. This lexicon is a fantastic abridgment of a much larger work. The newest edition has very nice glosses with a concise listing for each word. The word is given along with a number of examples of the different forms it may appear, greatly helping identification of either nouns or verbs. The primary meanings are also listed and in bold. The book is also arranged in alphabetical order according to the Hebrew, so just isolate the root and beginning letter, and you should be good to go. Overall, I highly recommend this lexicon for hands-on translation.

This is best reference for intermediate to advanced students of Hebrew who are actually interested in learning to read biblical Hebrew. Yes, you could use online tools to hover your mouse over the word you need, but you will not actually learn biblical Hebrew that way. If you are serious about learning Hebrew, you actually need to spend some time struggling through the lexicon and figure out the root of the word on your own. You will not learn to read the text by hovering your mouse over a web page or using a computer program. Holladay falls between the BDB and HALOT. For translation exercises and exams, I start with Holladay. I almost always find what I need. When the passage is particularly difficult or unclear, I'll crack open the BDB, which takes even more time to slog through. Again, using a computer program WILL NOT help you learn Hebrew: it convinces one that he or she is better than they actually are! (I found this out the hard way on an exam!)

I use HALOT and BDB on my computer software to do the heavy exegetical lifting, but it is nice to have this little one-volume lexicon on the shelf for looking up words when I don't have the software immediately available. Don't get this if you want a lexicon that provides comprehensive (or near comprehensive) citations of the occurrences of a word in the Bible. Holladay just provides a few examples of each category of use. Also, don't get it if you are looking for the work in the cognate languages provided by HALOT. While all the listings are in Hebrew script, some of the (secondary) meanings of words are headed by transliteration, so be sure you know both Hebrew script and the transliteration convention. Other than that, in a day of powerful software tools, it's nice to have this lexicon to do a quick look-up.

Holladay's a pretty decent lexicon. The transliterations drive me nuts. I didn't go to all the trouble to learn Hebrew to have transliterations getting in the way. It's easier to read the Hebrew than the transliterations. Other than that, it's a handy little lexicon. I have it, but I don't use it cuz I purchased Koehler Baumgartner for use with Accordance. No transliterations there. Even before that, I thought the out-of-date big d*mn book, BDB, was better to use because of the absence of the transliterations.

Holladay's work is easier to work with than the Gesenius Hebrew lexicon, although it looks like an abridged edition in comparison and obviously does not have the breadth of information as Gesenius' work. The print quality of this edition is not high, as it is apparently of scanned or photocopied pages, but is clear enough and readable. It fits nicely on a shelf above one's desk as a handy reference work for lexical help in Biblical Hebrew studies.

For any student of the Hebrew Bible desiring to have an affordable, accurate and handy Hebrew Lexicon, William Holladay's Lexicon is the perfect choice. Holladay includes the conjugations of every Hebrew verb and notes that feature the most update research that has come out of comparative Semitic studies. Amazingly, Holladay fits such features in a user-friendly volume that gives a busy pastor like me the opportunity to do better at exegeting the Hebrew text.

It was a required text for my hebrew class. Shipping was slow because of Korean import regulations and complications (I live in Seoul, Korea). Amazon's part in the shipping was great. The book is effective in translating. The dust jacket is far from sturdy and rips with ease. The paper is of good quality, highlighters do not bleed through very much. The type is neat and accurate. It is a little difficult to find some variant forms of words, but that may speak more to my skill and familiarity with the book than to it's format.

I agree with the other reviews about the value of this volume, and also with the downside of the printing quality. The printing is not too light, and is fairly good, but lacking in crispness which could cause some eye strain. The sharper printing should be in accordance with which a volume made in recent years should possess! Eerdmans should take note! I return to my copy because it was hard to read the vowels and Hebrew.

This Lexicon is based on HALOT which is a lot more expensive (120 GBP) and it is very useful as it shows the "other school" i.e. opposite to Gesenius and BDB from which it differs in many words. I would recommend to own both the original Gesenius (which is better than the "revised" version they called "BDB") and also this (Holladay) lexicon.

ho molti hebrew bible lexicons,, molto più completi ed elaborati. eppure il primo che io consulto è il suddetto lexicon. è una ottima sintesi del famoso 'Koelher-Baungartener', di cui pure possiedo una copia. per la sua praticità, essenzialità e chia arezza di esposizione, a me risulta assai soddisfacente
