I believe they are just weather resistant

What would you compare the sound quality to? Polk memphis jbl ?

Those are better than these and have larger magnets. These are good but not audiophile level by any means. My kickers handle more power and sound more robust IMHO.

Do they play well using an aftermarket stereo?

Yes I had them on an aftermarket Pioneer radio and they sounded awesome.
