The clear file is more fine. I've used the black for edges, then polished the edges clean with the clear file. I would only use the clear file for buffing nail tops, since removing too much nail can be painful. **Q: I have ridges on my finger nails and was told not to buff them off or I would have very thin nails. Will this make my nails thin?** A: I only use this for shaping my nails. I use a spongy block buffer (ONSEN BRAND) to remove ridges and buff them shiny bc in my opinion this tool works too good for buffing. Especially thin nails like mine. "It's like using a sledge hammer to pound in a tac" I love this thing though.
