Can I just hook one of these into the Preamp output on my amp and attach to my chair. I will be using it in my audio system, not home theater.

Gary these transducers are rated at 50 watts. A preamp output is not what you should consider for driving this load. Think Amplifier not Preamp! An amp that is capable of more than 30 to 35 watts should be best suited for this purpose. If you download the manual for this product you can find warnings not to surpass the 50 watt per unit rating. All* of those prior answers were Internet noise. #1. Neither helpful nor informative #2. Borderline helpful but not informative #3. What? & Wrong! #4.* I might be too hard on Sara. She is right to drive a group of these with hundreds of watts of power and Sara is also correct in guessing that the low preamp power will not work with the Bass Shaker. My contention with her response is that the harm of testing is that it is a complete waste of time. It is sort of trying to see if your toaster will work without power. How could it?

Is the enclosure made out of metal or plastic?

It is definately metal. Weighs close to 5 lbs. (2.3 Kg)

The product description says the shaker is 5.4" wide - is this accurate? What is the spacing for the mounting holes?

The outside diameter to the fins is 156mm or 6.14". The bolt hole circle diameter is 143.5mm or 5.65". It will take a #8 screw. The actual vibrating area on the bottom is 130mm or 5.1".

What's the best amp to use with these? Cheap but decent quality preferred...

Parts express has several amps that are good, they are made by Dayton audio. They have a new one that looks nice, APA150.
