Best option for built-in RV surge protection
I was able to find only a couple options for built-in surge protection, Hughes was recommended, and when I looked at the website the company noted that they stand behind the product and it has a replaceable surge models. Some reviews of other built-in RV surge protectors on Amazon noted occasional problems and failures which required full replacement at over $200 for the protector. Installation was straight forward with directions clearly provided. The most difficult part of installation is manipulating the heavy main power entrance cable to splice in the surge protector. In my case the cable came in from the outside plug behind two covers which were easily accessible (photos above). The cable came in from the top (first photo) then down to the compartment below (second photo) before going below the trailer and routed to the power converter. I spliced the surge protector in the bottom compartment and moved the cable in the top compartment back toward the rear for better cable routing. The individual cables are quite thick and stiff, so it took some work to get all connected into the protector. However once installed, the protector easily secured to the back wall with the included brackets. Start up was easily completed with the app (50 amp service through a 30 amp power adapter to a 110V outlet for battery charging). The protector performed flawlessly, following the directions to connect the iPhone app to the adapter went smoothly. The app provides power status and monitoring, it's an easy way to ensure power is within the rated supply and monitor power usage from RV devices. Available in several options including plug in, hardwired, 30A / 50A and with or without emergency power off. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Works exactly as advertised - Great piece of mind knowing you have protection.
Multiple camping friends recommended this. Been RVing all my life and never had an electrical issue but 2 of my friends have. One was the lucky camper to be the first to plug into a pedestal after a 30 to 50 amp campground upgrade, smoked all his RV electrical in their 5th wheel, if he would have had this that wouldn’t have happened. The other had one of these watchdogs and plugged in to a pedestal with a loose leg, it immediately tripped and prevented any potential damage that could have occurred. Still I hesitated with the theory the guy before me tested the pedestal but I’ve shifted my thinking on this due to the replaceable surge protection. My 5th wheel stays plugged in at home and this watchdog protects my electrical if we have brownouts or possibly near by lightning strikes. I also like that it will reset once it detects good power has been restored, we have a dog so its piece of mind knowing if the campground has a brief brownout it will reset which will restore the AC. It’s a bit pricey but it will cost more to repair the RV electrical if it’s ever damaged. Buy it, good piece of mind knowing you have clean power and surge protection.

Excellent piece of mind addition to my RV
I absolutely love this product! I am one of those people who worries about everything. I particularly worry about the electrical supply to my RV since it is new and there is so much electronic controls in this camper. I absolutely love the fact and ease of use the app is to monitor power inside the camper. The app is very easy to use and provides vital and I feel, interesting information. I know how every electrical device in my camper is using at all times. From a single lamp right up to the power hungry air conditioner. I know voltage coming off the post, wats and amp usage. It will also keep track of my kw usage if I am paying for electricity separately. The Watch dog itself is simply plug and play. Nothing else is needed. The unit comes with a way to secure the device to the pole but I have not found an effective way to do so yet. Overall, if you like to know what’s going on electrically in your RV, the Watchdog is a must. One note of caution! Hughes Autoforners has a lot of products to protect your RV electrical systems. I drank the Koolaid and am in pretty deep now. No regrets!!! Just gets expensive. The Watchdog is an excellent piece if mind addition and I highly recommend it.
